Donald Lee Grindahl, age 88, passed away on April 1, 2026, at Bethany Homes on South University Drive, Fargo, surrounded by family and assisted by Ethos Hospice.
Don was born on May 8, 1937, to Carl and Amy (Wenissen) Grindahl in Litchville, ND. Don moved to Fargo when he was in 8th grade and started working. Later, Don met and married Eunice Krueger. Eunice passed away in January of 1993. Don and Janie Meyer were married May 4, 2012, in West Fargo.
Don was drafted into the United States Army in 1959, so he and Eunice moved south and spent two years at Fort Bliss, TX. While Don served in the Army, he earned his GED. After his Army career, the family moved to West Fargo.
Don was the Superintendent of West Fargo Sanitation or as he liked to call himself, the Garbologist. During his tenure at the sanitation department, Don also drove Bus 25 for the West Fargo School District. Don liked to keep busy, so he also served in the West Fargo Volunteer Fire Department.
Don was very proud of his military service. He was an Honorary Member of the West Fargo VFW.
Some of Don’s favorite pastimes were riding motorcycle, going to Redhawk baseball games, attending his son Kelly’s sports games and having social time with his firefighting friends after he had retired. Don and Janie would go to the VFW on Friday nights and tear up the dance floor!
Don is survived by his wife Janie; his three sons, Kevin (Michele) Grindahl, Kelly Grindahl and Kyle Grindahl; stepchildren Ryan (Megan) Luken, Kayla (Jason) Knudson; grandchildren Amanda (Chris) Norton, Jarred (Kayla) Grindahl, Zachary (Mariah) Grindahl, Emilie Grindahl, Ryan Grindahl, Jayden Knudson and Grayson Knudson; great-grandchildren Victor (Brooke) Gilbert, Jada Gilbert, Anya Grindahl and Roman Norton; great-great-grandson Crosby Gilbert, brothers-in-law Kenny Haarstad, Monty Meyer, Rick Meyer (Martha), Kevin Meyer (Mary), Chris Penner, (Bobbi), sister-in-law Lisa Kimbrell (Steve) and many nieces and nephews.
