Donald James McCabe, 83, Fargo, died Thursday, January 2, 2025 at his son’s home with family under Banner Hospice care in Greeley, Colorado.

Donald was born May 12, 1941, in Furnas, Nebraska, to Harriet (Colling) and Selma Earl “Mac” McCabe.

He served in the National Guard before moving north from Fremont, NE to Fargo, ND in 1968. Once in Fargo, he worked for Hoerner Waldorf Fabrication. In the spring of 1970, he met the love of his life and future wife, Diane Sue “Suz” Kuska. They were united in marriage on April 30, 1971, in Adrian, North Dakota.

They settled on a dairy farm south of Dickey, North Dakota. In 1986 they sold the cows, and Don began work as a machinist at Haybuster in Jamestown. In 1992, they relocated to Fargo, and Don started working at Concord/Case, where he worked until retirement in 1998. He was a member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church.

He loved spending time with his family. Some of his favorite activities included camping, going to the casino, playing cards, bowling, golfing, and fishing and he took great pride in caring for his lawn and landscaping. He enjoyed rooting for and cheering on the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Twins, and the NDSU Bison. He attended many Vikings and Twins games, both at the Metrodome and Target Field. He was known to enjoy his morning coffee and donut holes that were sometimes shared with a furry friend Elmer.

Don enjoyed traveling. Some of his most memorable were the trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina to visit his brother, fishing trips with his son to Port Washington, Lake Michigan, and Canada, Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, Reno, and Medora. His travels also included two family Caribbean cruises, where he won a ship on a stick trophy for a ring toss game.

Don had a wonderful sense of humor. Those that knew him best most likely have a favorite “Don-ism” that he was noted as saying.

He is survived by his wife, Diane; daughter, Tiffany (Adam) Gaber, Fargo; son, Shawn (Stephanie) Greeley, CO; two sisters, Nancy Stoltenberg and Karen (Robert) Schmidt; one brother, Lowell; two sisters-in-law, Donna Larson and Denice Porter; one brother-in-law, Lynn Kuska; six grandchildren Kaitlyn (Tanner) Gaber, Kelli Gaber, Alyssa Gaber, Allison Gaber, Cameron McCabe, and Cristian McCabe; and many nieces and nephews.

  1. When we lose someone we love, we must learn not to live without them, but to live with the love they left behind. I know there are enough memories to sustain Don’s family and friends. He is missed by all whose lives he touched.
