Donna Hellekson, 87, left this world peacefully on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at Sanford Hospital in Fargo under the compassionate care of the Palliative Care medical team. Donna June McDonald was born October 20, 1928 in Grand Forks, ND. Donna was the oldest of four children and was raised by her grandmother, Ellen Green and her mother, Mabel Knutson. She graduated from Central High School in Grand Forks, ND and upon graduation worked for Implement Dealers. On July 14, 1951 she married Curtis Eugene Hellekson. The couple made their home in Grand Forks, ND until Curt started his career as an Insurance Adjuster in Sioux Falls, SD. During the course of his career, they transferred to Minot, ND, Mason City, IA, and finally Moorhead, MN where Donna remained until her passing. Curt and Donna were blessed with three children, Craig Alan, Debra Ann, and Denise Marie. Donna dedicated her life to raising her children and creating a loving home for her family. Donna loved children and after her own were raised, she delighted in providing childcare for other families in the community. The bonds she developed with the children in her care have been a source of great joy and a love that endures to this day. Donna was raised in family that delighted in music, laughter, and dancing. She had a very artistic eye and creative spirit. She loved animals, reading, watching sports, and discussing current events. Donna leaves behind her daughters, Debra and Denise; siblings, Jim McDonald, Claire Haugen, and Shirley Kresel; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mabel Knutson, grandmother, Ellen Green; half-brother, Neil “Bud” Bruce, half-sister, Verna Peterson; beloved husband, Curt; and her son Craig, whom she adored. There will be a visitation from 5-7:00 PM with a prayer service following at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at Boulger Funeral Home and Celebration of Life Center, Fargo. The funeral service will be at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at the Lutheran Church of Christ the King in Moorhead, with a visitation one hour prior. Donna’s daughters want to extend a special thank you to the staff at Sanford for their outstanding and compassionate care from the ER, to the ICU, to the Palliative Care Unit.

  6. Dear Hellekson Family:
This is Connie (Fergen). As I was looking for my dad’s death notice, I came across your mom’s and knew I recognized her name. This morning I saw her beautiful photo and knew it was your family. My dad (Vic Fergen) was at Sanford Palliative care starting Saturday September 10 and passed on 9/16. His room was directly across from the nurse’s station. Maybe we can take comfort in knowing that these 2, who were neighbors in 1970’s and 1980’s, were also neighbors at the end of their lives. In hindsight, my oldest brother Doug said he walked past one of you last week and thought he knew you from somewhere. Now we know.
Sorry for your loss and peace be with you. Connie

  7. Deb and Denise,
So sorry for the loss of your mother and your friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with you both at this time and we hope you find strength in the coming days, and months while coping with your loss. I wish that I could be there, while I have not seen Donna for a long time I always enjoyed the yearly letters at Christmas time and thought of her often. God Bless! Love and hugs to both of you.

  8. Hugs to you girls. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I had so much fun when we were young coming to your house. Donna was so great along with your dad. I think of those days now and then. Love to you both and please keep in touch. God bless you. Linda

  9. I never knew Donna but my mom Karen (Everson) speaks of your family often. I still have the beautiful pastel afghan that Curt and Donna sent when i was born. My thoughts and prayers to you both.

  10. Deb and Denise, I am so very sorry to hear of the loss of your Mom. Donna was a special woman and I know you must be heartbroken. My thoughts and prayers go out to you during this time. Much love from your Uncle Glen
