Dorothy Jean (St. John) Rose, 84, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2024 at Ecumen Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN.

She was born to Glen and Lilian (Jackson) St. John on December 9, 1939 in Red Wing, MN. She attended Bloomington High School and attended one year of Beauty School in Bloomington. She worked at Sears and was a hairdresser until she met the love of her life, Conrad Evans Rose in 1964. They were married on June 5, 1965, and together they had four children. They moved to Moorhead, MN and then Fargo, ND after Conrad’s graduation. Dorothy was a mom of four children but also a second mom to many others that she took care of in their home daycare, many of whom continued to call her “mom” long after they were old enough to care for themselves. Dorothy also served faithfully at Hope Lutheran Church in many capacities. She loved keeping in touch with people and telling them how much she loved them, was praying for them, and how much Jesus loved them, through letters, cards, and phone calls.

Dorothy was a Tupperware Distributer for several years. She loved to sing, play the piano, create things and bake, especially Norwegian foods. Dorothy and Conrad bought an RV and traveled the country for several years after they retired and then settled at Serenity Assisted Living in Dilworth, MN. They were married 55 years, before he passed away in 2021.

Dorothy leaves behind a sister, Marilyn (Luverne) Thompson; her children, Suzanne (Jessica) Henrich of Coon Rapids, MN; David (Danita) Rose of Moorhead, MN and their children, Jack Rose, Joe Rose, Brittany Baker, Brianna Baker, Tyler Baker, Maddie Baker; Sara (Daren) Stokke of Corpus Christi, TX and their children, Jacob (Lesley) Stokke, Luke (Martha) Stokke, Noah Stokke; Matthew (Annette) Rose of Cairo, MS and their children and grandchildren, Jordan (Casey) Huggins, Samuel (Kayla) Rose and Fae Lynn and Oliver, Cally (Johnnie) Baucom, Adalyn and William, Abby Rose, Lillian (Dakotah) Dees and Elizabeth and Haisly, Constance Rose, Emma Williams, Peter Rose, David Williams, Michael Rose, Levi Rose, Joel Rose.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I’ll never forget you, Grandma. I’m going to miss writing letters to you, hearing about the family news and who you recently visited. I’ll always remember that perfume you wore when I saw you. Many memories I will cherish and pass on to my kids. I love you, Grandma. May you rest in peace.

  2. I have such wonderful memories of Dorothy. She was like a grandmother to me. She was such a kind soul and loved by all who were blessed to know her. She will be greatly missed.

  3. I had the pleasure of taking care of Dorothy while she was at Ecumen in DL. She quickly became a favorite resident of mine. I loved our chats. She was such a nice lady and I will miss her dearly.

    • My deepest condolences to Dorothy’s family . I meet her at Ecumen and what a very friendly lady she was . God bless her and family ❣️🙏✝️😔

  4. We’ve only briefly known each other, but each letter we’ve gotten, our phone calls with Samuel and the babies, and birthday mail have been an absolute blessing and a joy to have gotten to share. Rest easy.

  5. Dorothy and Conrad were two of the finest people ever. They will be sincerely missed.

  6. My friendship with Dorothy goes back many years. I remember when she was the ALCW president at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on 16th St. S. in Moorhead. She was very young to be our president then! We were also in a young people’s group at Good Shepherd with Conrad & Dorothy

When our kids were grade school age, we had a coffee group at each other’s homes that included the kids who were not in school . Now that we are older, we meet once a month at various restaurants in Fargo, Moorhead, & Dilworth. We are known as the “Senility Sisters.” A fitting label, for sure.

When Dorothy moved to Detroit Lakes, we missed her attending our lunches! Now, we will miss her even more.

Rest in peace, dear Dorothy. You are loved and missed by many.

  8. Dorothy was a great neighbor and friend. She was wise and like a mother to me and super kind to our children. I loved her and will miss her.

  9. I had the good fortune of having had ‘Grandma Dorothy’ as my babysitter for years as a child. She was the most kind, person, the kind of person who you see the light of Christ in. I remember her always smiling and laughing and joking, she was always doing things for others and for her family and church. She became a life long family friend to my folks, and she taught us the tradition of Krumkake making at Christmas time which I still do every year with my own kids. Thank you Sara, Matthew, Suzanne, and David for always being kind and good ‘older kid’ role models! I loved both your parents, and Dorothy has a special place in my heart and I’m glad I have so many fond memories of her. Love to you all as you are honoring her today.

  10. My deepest condolences too family . I meet Dorothy at Ecumen in Detroit lakes . What a special lady . God bless her and family. 🙏✝️😔❣️

  11. Rest in peace Dorothy . You were loved by my little Breanna 29 years ago. I couldn’t have done it without you. You were like a grandma to her and us.
    Rolland and Shelley Saylet family

  12. Dorothy was my aunt but only 5 years older than me but more like a big sister. We grew up together, lots of fun memories. She was a wonderfully thoughtful person. Never forgot to send a card for all occasions. I talked to her on the phone several times a week and will miss her calls that started with “hi, sweetheart” and ended with “i love you”.
