Dr. Lakhbir Sarpal
September 10, 1932 ~ October 29, 2023
Lakhbir’s service will be livestreamed below starting at 9:00 AM Wednesday November 1, 2023.
Dr. Lakhbir Singh Sarpal of Fargo, North Dakota passed away peacefully at his home at the age 91 on Sunday, October 29, 2023 surrounded by family and loved ones.
Dr. Sarpal was born in Punjab, India on September 10, 1932, and is preceded in death by his father, Hazara Singh Sarpal; mother, Attar Kaur Sarpal; and sister, Jaswant Kaur (PapaJi). He came from humble beginnings; his father was a postmaster. Dr. Sarpal wanted to educate himself and had goals of becoming a physician. He worked hard in school and made his way through medical school specializing in general surgery. Dr. Sarpal left India and after a brief time in England, moved to Belfast, Northern Ireland. Here his surgical skills were honed and put to the test as he worked in a hospital during the “Troubles” of Northern Ireland’s religious war. After several years he had an opportunity to move his young family to Canada. In Wilkie, Saskatchewan, he continued to perform surgery with an ultimate desire to move to the United States. In 1991, Dr. Sarpal immigrated to the United States with his family and became a citizen. He resided in Fargo, North Dakota for over 25 years; here, he continued to see patients easing into semi-retirement by doing locums throughout rural communities in North Dakota. He retired in 2011 after a successful career in Medicine serving countless patients and families.
Dr. Sarpal was a devout religious man and was viewed as a pillar within his Sikh and Indian community. He enjoyed many things in life: playing his keyboard, singing, and poetry. He also loved to spend time with family and friends, visiting over a meal or sharing a cup of chai. Although he had traveled the world in his life’s journey, ultimately, home was where he loved to be the most.
Dr. Sarpal is survived by his wife Surjeet Kaur Sarpal: children Rajbir Sarpal (Kristin), Harsharan, Sona (Tony) Diocee, grandchildren; Harneal, Anjani, Milan and Mia, Great Grandchild, Xenia, sister Brijeshewar (Harnek) Singh.
Dr. Sarpal’s Memorial Service will take place on Wednesday, November 1st from 9:00-12:00 at Boulger Funeral Home 123 10th Street South, Fargo, ND 58103 followed by a procession to Riverside Cemetery. Special thanks to Sandford Hospital, Rehab and Hospice for the care of our father. The family would like to extend its love and gratitude to the entire Indian community.

Dr. Sarpal was a stalwart of the Indian community in Fargo. He was like a loving father to us. He loved to talk and joke with everyone, old and young. His and his family’s hospitality was well known to all of us. I remember fondly how he played the keyboard and sang soulful kirtans and bhajans at Gurpurab and other celebrations. At such times their house was filled with peace and joy, and everyone was made welcome. He also loved to tell jokes and make us laugh. It still brings a smile to my face at some of his jokes.
We will miss him a lot! He lived a full life and is a source of inspiration to all of us.
Om shanti om.
Our deepest condolences to the family on the loss of Dr. Sarpal. May his soul rest in peace.

All of us have many people speaking well of us, and perhaps some, not so. But I have heard only great affection and respect when anyone talked bout him. That says something about him.
We will miss him, He was part of Fargo for us. Chitra was especially fond of him, his kindness and consideration for others.

OUR PRAYERS..
We are deeply saddened with the passing away of Dr. Lakhbir Sarpal Singh, a true friend of the FM Indian community. We distinctly remember having welcomed him walking into one of the India Day celebrations in Comstock House in Moorhead when Dr. Sarpal and family had first moved into Fargo. Since then, Dr. Sarpal and Surjit Ji have graced every community event with their presence from what I can remember. More importantly, Dr. Sarpal was a fine gentleman, loved and respected by everyone. He was deeply religious and loved singing keertans.
May God bless his soul to rest in peace.
Our sincere condolences to Surjit Ji and family. Surjit Ji, our prayers are with you during these difficult times.
With Love,

He showed us how to be positive, genuine, generous and good human-being. He immensely impacted everyone who came in contact with him. Our deepest and sincerest condolences to dear Surjeetji and family.
My idol. My teacher, my Mamaji, my guide. You meet so many people in your life. Remember only a few and follow one or maybe two .
You either want to be him or be with him.
That was our mamaji
We have known the Sarpal family for a long time. Uncle and Aunty were probably the first family we reached out to when we moved to Fargo. They have been an integral, mostly fun part of our lives since then. Very sad to see uncle Lakhbir go. We shall always have fond memories of our times spent together. Sincere condolences to Surjeet ji, Harsharan, Rajbir and Sona. But uncle lived a great life. And we need to celebrate that. Because he would not want anything else. Our love to you all.
Still cant believe he’s gone. Love you Bade Mamaji always.
Dilbagh & Baldev 🙏❤️
Uncle Ji’s passing has left a huge void and he will be sorely missed. He was such a gentle, loving, and encouraging person who, in his quiet way, made the strongest impact in our lives. He was there for every milestone we reached, whether it was a graduation or a wedding celebration!
You have compiled such a beautiful gallery of pictures capturing some wonderful moments with dear Uncleji …a true shining star! 🌟 💫🌟
His spirit will shine forever

God’s peace be with you and your family Raj, love and comfort to your lovely mom.
Dearest Auntie, Sona, Harsharan, Rajbir, this is a time of great sadness. Uncle was truly an uncle for us. We have known Uncle and Auntie since we moved to Fargo 20 years ago, and their house has always been open and welcoming to us. Uncle was always so knowledgeable, so witty, and talented. We loved to hear his soulful ghazals and romantic Hindi songs that he would sing along with his keyboard or his harmonium.. His jokes made Auntie and all of us laugh. Auntie, this is a really painful time for you, this void will be difficult to fill, but it will get better. We will never forget Sarpal uncle, he has a place in our hearts forever.
Respectfully,
Brij and Meera Singh
