Duane Mastel
October 6, 1942 ~ February 13, 2021
Duane “Dewey” Mastel, of West Fargo, ND, lost his battle with cancer at the age of 78, passing away on Saturday, February 13, 2021. Dewey was a husband, dad and grandfather.
Duane Joseph Mastel was born to Valentine and Helen (Welk) Mastel on October 6, 1942, on a rural farm in McIntosh County, near Hague, ND. He graduated from Hague High School in 1961.
Dewey earned an associate’s degree from Bismarck State College while working at Conlin’s Furniture. He continued his college education at North Dakota State University. He began his career at First National Bank in Linton, ND while also joining the National Guard. While serving he became a Master Sergeant in charge of the platoon at the Emmons County Armory in Linton, ND. While living in Linton he treasured being a member of the choir, with his father, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, and later achieved 4th Degree in the Knights of Columbus.
On October 7, 1967, Dewey married the love of his life, Carlene Kay Vogel. In 1968, they moved to West Fargo and became owners of Fargo Ford Tractor. He achieved great success focusing on industrial equipment being one of the top 20 dealerships. While in the equipment business he also was a successful Kubota dealer, as well as serving as President of the North Dakota Implement Dealers Association, and also President of Big Iron. In 2003, he retired and sold the dealership. His retirement continued with his passion of selling cars initiating the next successful endeavor, Fargo Auto Sales. Two other treasures in his life include spending time at Floyd Lake since 1978, and spending winters in Arizona. Being married for 53 years, they raised two children, Paul and Pamela.
While loving to give back, one of his favorite was assisting with the purchasing of the first indoor hockey arena for West Fargo along with donating the tractor for the Zamboni. Another was building a dike for his neighborhood to prevent the Sheyenne river flooding and spending hours removing snow for all the neighbors. You could always find him Saturdays and Sundays at his dealership making sure his lot was perfected.
Dewey is survived by his wife, Carlene; two children – Paul Mastel; and Pamela (Kenneth) Astrup; three grandchildren - Lindsey, Cailen and Anika, all of Fargo; along with his siblings, who he had great love for, his sisters - Delores Hulm of Strasburg, ND; and Alvina (Willie) Voller of Mobridge, SD; his brothers - Willie (Virginia) Mastel of Dickinson, ND; Leo (Rita) Mastel of Strasburg, ND; and Gene (Marlene) Mastel of Mandan, ND; his sister-in-law, Angie Mastel of Ellendale, ND; and several nieces and nephews. Carlene and Family – We are so sorry for the loss of Duane. I always felt Duane was a good friend and a great example of an outstanding equipment business person. I was always impressed by Duane’s operation and the time he took in making it look so well organized and tidy. Each of those rows of equipment in the lot were perfect! But he was always people oriented and his customers very much appreciated Duane. We will miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time.
It’s going to be really hard to get along without my buddy Dewey. We had such good times together. Such a fun friend who would do anything for you. He was a great guy and will be really missed. Our prayers go out to the family. God bless.
Paul and Pam and family – so sorry for your loss. Looks like your dad had a good life and made a difference.
Haven’t seen much of Duane lately but want the family to know that my prayers are with you and may he rest in peace.
From his cousin & family.
Dear Family of Duane, It is with deepest sympathies that we send our prayers and thoughts to you at this time of sadness in the death of your husband, father and grandfather. It is a time of ask God to hold all of you in the ” Palms of His Hands” to give you comfort and peace. Regretfully, we will not be able to attend the ” Celebration of Life” services, but we will attend mass on Thursday, February 18th and light a candle in Duane’s honor. It will be a day of double thoughts, as my sister, Angeline Welk, also passed away three weeks ago, ( January 18) A cousin reunion will surely be going on in the Great Glory of Heaven. May beautiful memories bring joy, smiles and peace to all of you. Cousin, Loretta Welk-Jung and Ollie
Carlene and family, our thoughts and prayers are with you – hold on to the beautiful memories!
When Duane attended BJC he rented a sleeping room from my parents (on 7th and Blvd) and Willie and Eugene joined him as well. We never got to know him well as he and his brothers came and went from school to part-time jobs. It is exciting to know the various projects has taken on since graduating from BJC. So sorry to hear he battled Cancer just as my mother and father did some years back.
My older brother, Ray, lives in Minnesota, Dale is in Bismarck and I’m in Colorado Springs, CO, (My husband was in the Army Band during the Viet Nam conflict and was stationed at Ft. Carson.) The Lord’s blessings to Duane’s wife, children, grandchildren and to Willie and Eugene as well.
