Durran Henry (Hank) Unger, 92, died peacefully surrounded by family at Sanford Hospital on Saturday, June 26, 2021.
Durran was born to parents Henry and Magda (Sckerl) Unger on July 22, 1928, on a farm near Eden, South Dakota. Durran graduated from Page High School in 1946 and started working on the Great Northern Railroad in November of that year. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 and was stationed for a time in Austria, his ancestral home.
Durran returned to the railroad as a Signal Maintainer and then enrolled at the North Dakota State School of Science, Junior College receiving an associate degree in engineering in 1955, and then went on to earn a Bachelor’s of Science degree from NDSU in 1959.
In 1959, Durran married Darlyne Carlson from Page, ND. The Ungers became a family of six with the arrivals of Matthew, Teresa, Michael, and Max. The family moved from Larimore to Fargo in 1972 due to a promotion from BNSF.
He retired from the railroad at age 57 in 1987 which left many years to enjoy camping with the family, playing endless games of cribbage, and time with his grandchildren. Durran and Darlyne were able to enjoy many trips including Mexico, the Caymans, and across the U.S.
Durran was passionate about serving the church and the community. He worked diligently at both the FM Emergency Food Pantry and served on the Board of Directors of the United Savings Credit Union for 16 years. He also served on the board of the Fargo Golden K Kiwanis and the Senior Commission.
Durran enjoyed reading, especially WWII history, collecting stamps, and camping with the family.
Durran’s calm and consistent presence will be greatly missed by his family. He was a strong and steady source of enjoyment and support for many.
Donations may be made in Durran's name to the FM Emergency Food Pantry
