Born in: Fargo, North Dakota
Resided in: Grand Forks, North Dakota

Edward Adolph Ebbighausen Jr., age 76, of Grand Forks, formerly Hillsboro, ND, died on Monday, January 20, 2025, at the new Altru Hospital in Grand Forks.

Edward was born on July 22, 1948, the son of Edward and Arlyn (Hong) Ebbighausen at St. Luke’s Hospital in Fargo, ND, of an extremely difficult childbirth, which created his mental disabilities. His parents were told to put him in an institution, but that was not going to happen – and led him down a carefully guided lifes path. Ed grew up on the Ebbighausen farm northeast of Hillsboro and was educated in Fargo, later Hillsboro Public Schools, and then in Grand Forks at the Opportunity Training Center.

During his years of employment, Ed worked at the UND Student Union, Columbia Hotel, Card Board Collectibles and Agassiz Enterprise. He lived in various locations, but retired to his residence of 36 years at 210 Chestnut Street, however, the farm was considered his home. Ed’s radio was his best friend, with music interests from Hank Thompson, Marvin Gaye, to his favorite band “The Who” and lately hard rock 108 FM. Green was his favorite color, and he feared Canadian thistle. Christmas and birthdays created a lot of anxiety and joy! In today’s world Ed would be known as the “Original Cold Coffee Guy”.

After retirement Ed participated in day programs at the Listen Drop-in Center and have annual meetings at Development Homes. Special Olympics bowling would be his best sport. He attended the Wesley Methodist Church / Sunday School, later United Parish Church, and understood what actually happened at Christmas and Easter.

Ed was truly a unique person, who would create in us a deeper insight to tolerance, love, patience and acceptance. The success he achieved in life can be attributed to his parents, who loved him unconditionally. In his final hour at the new Altru Hospital, Ed was still listening to hard rock on 108 FM.

Edward is survived by his brother, Brad Ebbighausen; his sister, Deb (Tom) Eblen; his nephew, Jason (Tiffany) Eblen; and his two nieces – Megan Eblen and Kristen Booth. Also surviving are his great niece and nephews – Maya, Thomas, Trenton, and Tristan (Emily), along with great-great niece, Benelli; and many dear cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; all of his aunts and uncles; and a few important cousins.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 PM Saturday, March 8, 2025, at the Hillsboro United Parish UCC-UMC – with a visitation one hour prior. His final resting place will be with his parents at Riverside Cemetery in Hillsboro.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Boulger Funeral Chapel in Hillsboro, ND. To sign the online guest book, please visit our website at www.boulgerfuneralhome.com

  1. So sorry for the loss of edward I remember when I used to work with them.We used to drive to fargo to go to john deer to look at tractors. And also some toy stores to look at tractors. He really love them.

    • Oh Ed, you were the 1st person I worked with when I started my career in this field. We talked tractors, farming, and about hillsboro. He was always asking me about my horses too. Not to many questions tho, lol.

  2. I cared for Edward for many years, he was truly the sweetest and smartest person ever. I loved seeing him everyday and being greeted with a loving smile & compliment. He never failed to make everyone around him laugh. May his heaven be filled with alligators, transistor radios, and McDonald’s kids meals w/ a trinket. He will be missed!

  3. Hey Brad/Deb,

So sorry to hear about the loss of Edward. I have many fond memories with Edward in Grand Forks, Hillsboro and Churches Ferry. It was always so interesting listening to his stories about his life over the years on the Ebbighausen farm. He definitely had an encyclopedic memory. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
