Edward Algot Anderson, 86, passed away peacefully December 6, 2023 at his home surrounded by love.
Edward was the 4th child born to Algot and Della (Lodoen) Anderson on June 6, 1937, in Argyle, MN. He attended school in Argyle and graduated from High School in 1955. He joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 18 and served from 1955 – 1959. He met and married the love of his life Marion VanBaalen of Warren, MN on January 6, 1962. They had one son, David.
In 1963 Edward re-enlisted with the Navy. The three of them were stationed in Norfolk VA. During the next 12 years, he served as an ET – Electronic Technician and earned the First-Class rank. He was stationed in Athens, Greece, Newquay, England, and Waukegan, Illinois. While at the Great Lakes Base, he was a company commander, taught electronic school, and was “pushin’ boots”. He was also stationed in South Carolina where he was honorably discharged on April 26, 1976. They moved to Fargo, ND. Ed furthered his education and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business from Moorhead State University in 1986. He continued working as an electronic technician at Anacomp until his retirement in September 1996. Ed received the Michael Seaton Volunteer of the Year Award honoring his 30-plus years of service as an AARP Driver Safety Instructor. Ed was a loyal member of the First Presbyterian Church Men’s Group, the American Legion, and received the Patriotic Citizen Award from the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
Ed loved baseball, especially attending his nephew’s games. He also enjoyed golf, the stock market, and automobiles! He attended car shows, instantly recalling makes and models with little effort. He could fix anything with a motor. He was patient and intelligent. When Ed spoke, it was wise to listen. He took life in stride and had the best sense of humor. There was no greater joy than being “papa” to his grandchildren. He loved talking about life with his adopted granddaughter, Hannah, “checking the roses” with the ‘little girl’, Elizabeth, and teaching Erik how to do “numerous things”! He proudly attended their activities. In 2004, Marion and Ed purchased a lake place on Sauer Lake in Minnesota. This provided years of watching water adventures, welcoming family and friends, and sitting around the fire under a “necker’s moon”. Ed’s wisdom and guidance will forever be missed.
Edward is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Marion, his son David (Mary), grandchildren Elizabeth and Erik (Jamie Tjornehoj), brother Donald, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, brother, and granddaughter, Hannah Sirek.
In lieu of flowers please send memorials to Sanford Hospice of Fargo or The Salvation Army.
