Edward “Jay” Grube, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, & veteran, passed away peacefully at Eventide in West Fargo, ND, on November 5, 2024, at the age of 92.
Jay was born on January 17, 1932, to Helen and Edward Grube of Pembina. He attended Central High School in Grand Forks and worked on his uncle’s farm near Pembina. In June of 1952, Jay married his beloved wife, Dora Mae Horsely, from Neche, ND. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from December 1952 to December 1954. They lived at Fort Riley, Kansas, White Sands Proving Grounds, New Mexico and Fort Sill, OK. After Jay’s discharge, Jay and Dora Mae returned to Pembina. He found a passion for farming and swinging a hammer, built homes and other structures in and around Pembina. Together they raised four children until Dora Mae’s untimely passing on December 31, 1986.
Jay married Linda Diggs, and they resided in Pembina until moving to Santa Teresa, New Mexico in 1996. Jay enjoyed spending his summers back in Pembina, working on Warner Farms. He spent 24 years in New Mexico before returning to Fargo in 2020.
Jay is survived by his children: Jim Grube of Fargo, David (Rhonda) Grube of Cavalier, Duane (Shelli) Grube of Fargo, and step-son Brett (Kate) Diggs of Arlington, Virginia; grandchildren: Mary Travelstead Zatkalik of West Plains, Missouri, Erica and Samantha Travelstead of Roswell, New Mexico, Karissa (Rocky) Fredrickson of Cavalier, North Dakota, Camille Widme of Eagan, Minnesota, Jordan and Jaxson Grube of Fargo, North Dakota, and Chris Callaway of Muleshoe, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Jasper Brown and Brantley and Parker Widme; and many nieces and nephews.
Jay is preceded in death by his parents, wife Dora Mae, sweet daughter Paula Sue, nephew Paul Grube and four siblings: Gene Warner, Gary Grube, Tom Grube, and Gayle Budge.
Jay was a proud Veteran and member of the VFW and American Legion for over 60 years.
He will be greatly missed by many family members and friends.
To honor our father’s wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service. His ashes will be buried in Pembina next to Dora Mae and Paula Sue.
Jay lived at Fieldstone Village Senior Apartments where I am an employee. Jay was a very kind, shy person whom I enjoyed visiting with. He had a major sweet tooth, so at Christmas time I would bring him a bucket full of goodies. You will be missed Jay. Condolences to Duane & Shelly & family
I also live at Fieldstone, but I met Jay through my daughter Paula, who works on the railroad with Jay’s son, Duane. Every time I would bake, I’d bring Jay a container full of goodies. He’d take them with a big smile on his face, and when he’d return the container, he would always include a nice, handwritten thank you note.
Every time I bake now, I’ll think of you, Jay. We’ll all miss you. May you rest in peace.
Condolences and prayers for his family.
I remember Jay with the most beautiful smiling eyes and a gentle soul.I remember him out driving truck for beet season and he was my friends’ dad. When I think of him I remember fondly a story he used to tell me about my Grandpa Rolland that always made me laugh about them being out at the farm and cooking a chicken in the backseat of a car. I do not remember the details well but loved the story because it made me feel closer to my Grandpa that had passed. He’d tell it to me every time I asked to hear it too. God bless you Jay and rest in peace
