Elise “Cookie” Torbenson, age 77, passed away at Eventide Nursing Home in Moorhead, Minnesota, on Sunday, September 15, 2024.
Elise Cecile Johnson was born in Breckenridge, MN, on October 26, 1946, the daughter of Neil and Cecelia (Pechlat) Johnson. She grew up in Herman, MN, where she attended and graduated as valedictorian from Herman High School in 1964. After her graduation, Cookie attended St. Catherine’s University and earned a bachelor’s degree in education.
Elise was united in marriage to David Torbenson on January 27, 1968 at St. Charles Catholic Church in Herman, MN. Following their marriage, they lived in Reno, Nevada, Bismarck, North Dakota, and finally made their home in Fargo, North Dakota where they raised their two daughters. Cookie spent most of her working life was as a social worker at Cass County Social Services.
Cookie enjoyed crocheting, needlepoint, sewing, and reading books – snuggled up with her cats. Another hobby that Cookie enjoyed was tending to her vegetable garden and canning the leftover veggies she grew.
Cookie is survived by her two daughters – Mary Zukaitis of Lakeville, MN; and Suzette Klose of Fargo, ND; her grandkids – Allison Klose, Taylor and Dillon Zukaitis; her sisters – Eileen Komrosky and Diane Christopher; and her aunt, Angie Miller.
Cookie was preceded in death by her parents, Neil and Cecelia; her husband, David; and her grandson, Owen Zukaitis.
The family would like to offer a very special thank you to all of her caregivers and Eventide as well as the hospice nurses during the short time she was there. The loving care provided to her and to her family will never be forgotten – it was a very large part in the ease and comfort of her passing.
FUNERAL MASS: 11 AM Saturday, September 21, 2024, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Fargo – with a visitation one hour prior and a reception to follow in the church social hall

So sorry for the loss of Cookie. She was part of our neighborhood growing up.
Sympathies to all of Elise’s family who mourn her loss as l do. She was one of the first in attendance when the prayer shawl group started @ St. Anthony’s some years back. Her mom crocheted/knitted also & that’s how I got to know Elise. Will miss her soft spoken voice & laugh. Keep the many good memories of Elise close to your hearts 🥰
