Esther Marie (Lehfeldt) Schreiner, 88, passed away peacefully at Eventide on Eighth in Moorhead, MN on Sunday, August 23, 2026, surrounded by her family.
Esther was born May 22, 1938 to Carl and Lillian (Barz) Lehfeldt in Oriska, ND, where she learned the value of hard work growing up on the family farm; each day before school getting up early to milk the cows, feed the pigs, and collect eggs. She attended a one room schoolhouse near Fingal, ND, where she read the entirety of their library by the time she was eleven years old. She carried her love of reading throughout her life. After high school, at 19, she taught at the schoolhouse for a year before relocating to Fargo, ND to be near her younger sister, Jan.
Esther was united in marriage to John “Jack” Schreiner on November 23, 1960, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Moorhead, MN. Their family grew as they welcomed their four children: John, Mary Frances, Cheri, and Debbie; unfortunately losing Mary Frances shortly after she was born. They settled in Hawley, MN and owned Jack’s Bar for a time before settling in Dilworth, MN. Esther worked for Burroughs, which became Standard Register, for a number of years as the Office Manager. She would go on to own and run Accent Business Forms and Supplies for many years before she found her passion in her longest career of 25 years as a care giver for Clay County Residence Inc caring for individuals with severe disabilities. She continued her work as a foster mother for an individual with downs syndrome caring for him in her home in Glyndon, MN.
Everyone who knew Esther knew how full of life she was and what a kind heart she had. Ever the farmer’s daughter, she kept a garden to supply herself with vegetables to can and share with family including stewed tomatoes, jellies, homemade apple and rhubarb sauce, sauerkraut, and her famous icicle pickles and pepper relish. Her culinary prowess extended beyond canning; baking pies, apple crisp, and baking spritz cookies with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren during the Christmas season; a tradition she kept till her passing and one that will be continued by her family.
Esther was also known for her skill crocheting afghans, many of which were gifted to friends and family over the years, especially at the arrival of a new baby. She made hundreds of doilies, dish cloths, and barbie doll clothes for her granddaughter, now passed down to her great granddaughter. Her love of reading continued throughout her life with most surfaces in her house stacked high with books. She also enjoyed playing cards, trips to the casino, playing pull tabs at the Legion and VFW, playing her organ, and country music, especially Charley Pride.
Most importantly, her family held the most prominent place in her heart. She loved being a big sister, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was everyone’s “mom.” She cherished any and all family gatherings from holidays to reunions, Vikings football watch parties, sleepovers with the grandkids, afternoon coffee visits, and everything in between. Those who knew her will remember her kind smile that always adorned her face, infectious laugh, her warm heart, her wisdom, and constant support. She will be truly missed.
Esther is survived by her children, John (Lydia) Schreiner, Cheri (Phil) Keller, and Debbie (Bob) Kinnen; grandchildren, Trevor (Chelsea) Keller, Amber Keller, Jacob (James Godwin) Kinnen, Nick (Zach) Kinnen, Carter (Baillee Lovell) Keller, and Michael (Michelle) Kinnen; great grandchildren, Landon, Mikiah, Quinten, and Braelynn Keller; siblings, Gloria Richhart, James (Ruth) Lehfeldt, Helen Gwennap, and Sharon (Dan) Sims; brother-in-law, Roger Crawford; sister-in-law, Lynnette Lehfeldt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her infant daughter, Mary Frances; siblings, Dale (Olive) Lehfeldt, Jan Crawford, Dick Lehfeldt; and brothers-in-law, Alvin Richhart and Ron Gwennap.
Esther’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Eventide in Moorhead for their love and compassionate care over the last few years. They truly became our extended family and we are forever grateful.

Esther was a genuine lovely woman.
I am so sorry for your loss.

I will certainly miss Esther’s beautiful. May she rest in God’s eternal peace.
I will miss Esther’s BEAUTIFUL SMILE
From my very earliest memories Mom has been everything a Mom should be; strong, courageous, wise, patient compassionate, kind, empathetic and most of all so very loving. She always had a deep and abiding faith in God and we all asked her to pray for us and our families countless times. She ended every phone conversation and every visit by saying “I love you!” Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were the center of her world, her heart and her hope! She was loved by all who knew her and left a trail of beautiful memories everywhere she went. Gone but never forgotten Mom, forever in our hearts!
My Grandma was a wonderful person who was loved by everyone who knew her and will be dearly missed. I’ll never forget all the good times I spent with her sleeping over on the weekends and a kid or going there for lunch my junior and senior years of high school. She always had a home cooked lunch and if I was lucky some apple crisp for dessert.
Life won’t be the same without her around but the memories and stories about her will never fade.
From my earliest memories Mom was everything that a Mom should be; patient, compassionate, strong, empathetic, wise, gentle and most of all incredibly loving! She was the kindest person I know and everyone loved her and her beautiful smile, her big heart and the way she made everyone feel special. She lived by example of treating others the way you want to be treated. She had a deep and abiding faith in God that never wavered; even through all the difficulties she experienced in her life, especially the last 3 years. We all asked her to pray for us and our families countless times. She exemplified all that is good and decent in this world and all of our lives are so much richer and blessed for having her in them. Family was everything to her and her face would light up when talking about us, especially the grandchildren and great grandchildren! She was so proud of each of us and her faith in us was a true gift! The memories we made we will treasure always and she will live on in all those whose lives she touched! She ended every phone call or visit with “I love you!” And I already miss hearing those words. I know she rests easy now, she’s an angel in heaven watching over us all and she’s been reunited with all those she has loved and missed for so long. And I know we too will see her again one day! Blessed be the memory of our beloved Mom, Grandma, G’ma, sister and friend! Forever in our hearts until we meet again Mom, I love you so much!
Although we lived many miles apart, our friendship endured for 75 years.
I miss our long telephone conversations.
Rest in Peace my friend.
Nick and family, I am sorry to be reading about your Dear mother/grandmother. She sounded like the perfect person in your lives. May her kindness and loving spirit live on in all of you.

Esther was more than just my grandma. She was my best friend, confidant, biggest supporter, and someone I deeply admired. Growing up, her house always felt like a second home to me. I spent endless weekends with her, and she always knew how to make me feel special. She would save the garden veggies for me to pick because she knew I got a thrill out of it, buy snacks that my mom refused to buy, like Reese’s Puffs and Fruit Gushers, strain her eyes in poor lighting to finish puzzles with me, and convincingly pretend that my baking creations were actually edible. So many of her hobbies, like reading, gardening, baking, and cooking, became my own because I wanted to be like her. I will forever be grateful to her for the things she taught me and the countless memories we made together.
To my Grandma, I know you are having a ball up there and were welcomed into heaven by so many who were waiting for you with so much love. I hope you’ve cracked a cold one, found a great book, and are scratching the ears of all the pups you loved here. I love you more than words can say. I will miss you every day until we meet again.
