Evelyn Mae Soukup, 95, of Fargo passed away in the early morning hours of January 23, 2026, at The Shores Assisted Living Facility in Maplewood, Minnesota.

Evelyn was born on May 11, 1930, to Lawrence and Margaret Ukestad in Fargo, the oldest of five siblings. She attended grade school and high school in Fargo, Graduating from Sacred Heart Academy in 1948.

After high school she worked at St. Luke’s Hospital in Fargo, eventually meeting the love of her life, Al Soukup. The couple married in December of 1953 at St. Mary’s Cathedral, and they made their home in Fargo. Al and Evelyn raised six children, all of whom attended Holy Spirit Grade School, Fargo Shanley High School, and North Dakota State University. She was a longtime active member of the Guild and Circle at Holy Spirit, and she and Al co-chaired the annual Holy Spirit Bazaar for several years. Evelyn and Al were also active in the annual Roger Maris Golf tournament.

Later, after her children were out of school, Evelyn co-founded and operated The Boutique, a retail store in downtown Fargo. After Al and Evelyn retired, they enjoyed the snowbird life, dividing time between their lake home on Turtle Lake near Cormorant, MN and Lake Havasu City, AZ. Evelyn enjoyed many friends at the lake. Pontoon rides, water aerobics, cocktails on the dock and a fish fry were always on the agenda. While in Arizona, Evelyn enjoyed morning walks with friends and the many annual events held by the river in downtown Havasu. Al and Evie truly loved hosting their children and grandchildren at the lake and in Arizona.

Evelyn is survived by her children Mike (Shelley) (Oakdale, MN), Kathy Cicora (Joe) (Antioch, IL), Nancy Tufto (Kris) (Cheyenne, WY), Greg (Dawn) (Palos Heights, IL) and Scott (Annie) (West Fargo) ND); daughter-in-law, Lori (Stillwater, MN); a sister, Linda Bortke, (Bismarck, ND); and a brother, Larry Ukestad (Jamestown, ND). Other survivors include 14 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband; son Al; her parents; and two sisters, Delores Johnson and Darlene Arendt.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I have fond memories of our ladies exercise group… walking during the spring and fall and swimming in the warm summer months. There was a lot of comaraderie amongst us ladies back then… enjoying coffee parties, birthday parties and celebrating our lake friendship. Ahhh… another generation gone. Thankful for good memories of fun times. Evie was always such a gentle and thoughtful friend.

  2. Mike, Kathy, Nancy, Greg and Scott,
What a truly amazing person your mother Evie was. I was honored to be a part of your family during my high school/college years. Your mom was always so welcoming and treated friends of her children like her own. I feel lucky to have known her as I’m sure many people are. Please celebrate your cherished memories of a wonderful life she had. That will add comfort to your healing.
    Scott

  3. My sincere condolences to the Soukup family. Evie was a great gal.

  4. Colleen Lavelle Roy says:

To the Soukup family, I am so sorry you lost your wonderful Mother / Grandmother. She was a beautiful person. How fortunate we all were to having know her.
    Sending you prayers & hugs.

  5. Coach Mike, Kathy, Nancy, Greg and Scott, What a warm and beautiful person your mom was. I have great memories of your mom’s welcoming smile and comforting presence whether at the lake or the house on Elm. And of course – always an offer for something to eat. Keep her in your heart.

  6. Mike, Kathy, Nancy, Greg, and Scott
Condolences on your mother’s passing. She was a wonderful person who lived a full life—honored to have known her and the rest of your family from grade school at Holy Spirit through High School at Shanley. I had the pleasure of visiting with Evie at the end of October this past fall, when I was a guest presenter at the residence where she was living in Stillwater. She had a warm, welcoming smile, and we talked about where you all were and what you were doing. While I was giving my presentation, I looked over at her, and she had a smile and a proud look on her face, as though she were looking back in time, watching one of you at a school event, game, or other activity. While she will be missed, her memory lives on.

  7. Mike, Kathy, Nancy, Greg and Scott-
We have so many great memories of our family reunions with all of you, and our parents. I can’t help but smile remembering all the laughter and love the family shared, and still does. It’s a difficult time in life when lose our elders… how nice it would be to hear their laughter again.

Sending our love to all of you,
    Chris and Judy Perry

  8. Al and Karen Fabricius says:

I have great memories of the Soukup Family. I had the privilege of babysitting you kids but it was an easy task. (I think I was overpaid!!). All of you had the values and discipline of your Parents. Evie will be missed but I will always remember her genuine smile and laughter. Wish we could be with you at the Service and see all of you. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

    Love. Al and Karen Fabricius

  9. My dear friends, Please know of my prayers for all of you during this time. Your parents are a special part of my childhood memories as our families grew up together at Holy Spirit and Shanley. I always had, and will always have, the greatest love and respect for your family. I sent my dad and 2 brothers to greet her when she arrived in Heaven….however I know they had to wait in line after your dad and beloved brother Al. May your dear mom be held tenderly in the arms of God whom she loved so dearly and may memories console your hearts.

  10. Kathy, Mike, Nancy, Greg, and Scott: So very sorry for the loss of dear Evie, who my parents loved and was one of the kindest and most gracious persons I’ve ever known. I think my mother better connected with Evie than just about anyone; it was easy to do, but they were so much alike. You have so many memories — hold tight to those, and please know of our thoughts and prayers for your mom and for your family.

  11. Always enjoyed our Turtle Lake friends the Soukups. Great memories. Sending sympathies to the family
