Everett Dale Ownby was born on April 6, 1934, in Buffalo, Missouri, the third of five children, and went home to be with the Lord on March 4, 2025, at Viking Manor Nursing Home in Ulen, Minnesota after a 7-year battle with Alzheimer’s.

Dale was raised in Springfield, Missouri, and graduated from Central High School. He served in the Air Force from 1954-58 and was honorably discharged. He married the love of his life, Catherine Ann McLane, on February 18, 1961. Over the next eight years, they were blessed with three daughters: Cynthia (Cindy), Margaret (Peggy), and Sarah.

There was always laughter when Dale was around. He loved making puns and telling jokes. The cornier the better. His measurement for success was how loud the groans were and his smile grew correspondingly.

His Christian faith was the cornerstone of his adult life. He loved the Lord deeply and tried to serve Him well throughout his life. He was a humble man who loved God and his family. His best friend was his younger brother, Ken, and their two families spent many vacations together and built beautiful memories.

Dale worked for the railroad for most of his adult life, starting with the Frisco/Burlington-Northern Railroad in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He and Cathy later moved to Little Rock, Arkansas, where he would eventually retire from the Union Pacific Railroad.

Dale was preceded in death by his mother, Mable Fugitt; stepfather, Glen Fugitt; brothers, Bill and Ken; sisters, Jessie Ruth and Virginia; daughter, Peggy Ownby Irwin; and grandson, Stephen Hershberger.

Dale is survived by his wife of 64 years, Catherine (Cathy) Ownby of Viking Manor Nursing Home in Ulen, MN; daughters, Cindy (Jay) Hershberger of Hitterdal, MN, Sarah (Doug) Holston of Moorhead, MN; sister, Kathryn (Fred) Winn of Las Cruces, NM; grandchildren, James Irwin, Kimberly Irwin, Valerie Vigil, Brett Hershberger, Jillian Jirik, Julie Hershberger, Catherine Falconnier, Alicia Ringsaker, Timothy Falconnier, Emily Holston, Abigail Holston, Jack Holston, Margaret Holston, and Joseph Holston; great-grandchildren, Natalie Day, Isabel Day, Elias Anderson, Lyam Nelson, Reagan Ringsaker, Juniper Falconnier, and Maria Hershberger.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I had the pleasure of meeting Dale. A good storyteller and a nice man. I regret his passing and know that he is at peace.

  2. I didn’t know Dale, but learned a good deal about him from Jay and Cindy. I know what a wonderful, devoted family man he was and how devoted his family was in return. Is there anything more beautiful or important in today’s world than this!

  3. Grandpa Dale was an amazing man. I will cherish the memories I have of him, and promise that Dylan Irwin will always hear all my stories about his Grandfather. ❤️
