Flossy (Flora Belle) Knudson, Finley, ND, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2024 at Luther Memorial Home in Mayville, ND at the age of 85.

Flossy McKenzie was born August 13, 1938 to Roderick and Agnes (Jacobson) McKenzie. She grew up in Logan Center Township and graduated from Logan Center School.

Flossy married Warren Knudson on February 6, 1959. To this union were born three daughters: Susan, Brenda, and Denise. They made their home in Finley, ND.

Post-high school, Flossy worked as an aide at the nursing home in Northwood, ND. Later, she would help her husband plant trees for Steele County Soil Conservation. Flossy also worked a couple of years at Fetting’s Bakery in the Frozen Foods Division. Flossy dedicated 40+ years to being a childcare provider in her home, retiring at the age of 75. Generations of families were given tender care by her gentle hands and encouraging words. She was once referred to as the “baby whisperer.” Flossy had a wonderful sense of humor with a quick wit and stylish sass. She was quiet and reserved, yet unassumingly funny.

Flossy is survived by her three daughters, Susan (Mike) Anderson of Finley, ND; Brenda Ihry of Fargo, ND; and Denise (Jeff) Sloan of Finley, ND; grandchildren, Jeremy (Jill) Anderson, Eric (Amber) Anderson, Jessica (Matt) Linback, Jamie (Matt) Lange, Tyler (Stevie) Ihry, Derek Sloan, Alycia Sloan (Zach) Conrad; by several great-grand children and one great-great grandchild; brothers, Lewis (Dorothy) Hilstad, Richard Hilstad, and Edward Hilstad; by Warren’s children, Kristi Layton, Diane Hall, and Brad Dorsher; sister-in-laws, Janet McKenzie and Carol Hilstad; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren; her parents; siblings, Donald McKenzie, Sybil Berg, Arthur Hilstad; son-in-law, Dale Ihry; and several in-laws.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff of both Luther Memorial Home and Hospice of the Red River Valley for the compassionate care and support given to Flossy and her family. The work you do is important to many—please know we appreciate you!

  1. My memories of your Mom bring smiles and laughter. She was so much fun to be around. I know you are going to miss her terribly. You’ll go to the phone to call her and then realize, I can’t do that. We never forget! I pray you’ll have lots of support from your siblings, families and friends at this time. I wish I was there to give you a hug! JoAnne

  2. Dear Grams, you made me feel welcome and loved. You made us laugh and we couldn’t help but hold onto a smile around you. I wish my kids and their kids could have known you. I have no doubt they would have been welcomed with open arms as well!
