Florence Thompson

Florence E. Thompson, 86, Fargo, ND, died Monday, March 19, 2007 in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo. Florence was born November 16, 1920 on the family farm near Davenport, ND, the daughter of Emil and Martha (Jahnke) Piper. She attended school in the Casselton area and graduated from Casselton High School. She attended Moorhead State University. She moved to California during World War II, where she lived until 1949. Florence and Fred E. Thompson were married November 17, 1950 in Detroit Lakes, MN. They farmed north of Casselton. The couple retired from farming in the 1980?s and continued to live on their farm in the summer and for 20 years wintered in Mesa, AZ. Fred died June 10, 1998. Florence continued living on the farm until the fall of 2004 when she moved into Fargo. Florence had an interest in politics and ran for the Senate in 1972 as a Democrat. She was a 4H leader, was active in bible study, and garden club and won numerous awards in floral competitions at the fair. She had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel. She was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church where she was active in landscaping the grounds, and was active in the church circle, the quilting group, the coffee house, and as a church greeter. Florence is survived by three daughters, Sharon (Wayne) Morris, Como, CO, Judy L. Steffes, Fargo, ND, and Phyllis (Dale) Lincoln, Arthur, ND; 6 grandchildren, Katja Sattler, Lindsay Steffes, Jordyn Steffes, Cody Lincoln, Jennie Brown, and Jacquelyn Morris; 3 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Myrtle Horn, Alaska and Ethel Nereson, Fargo, ND. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred; 2 brothers, Irvin Piper and Clarence Piper; and 3 sisters, Fern Harmon, Elfie Friese, and Adella Ritter.
