Frances "Fran" M. Caulfield of Fargo, ND passed away Thursday, July 21, 2011, at Rosewood on Broadway, at the age of 89.  During her last days, her husband of 64 years, her children and grandchildren were at her side.

Frances May Yochem was born to Amos and Frances Elizabeth (Holder) Yochem on May 4, 1922 on a farm near McClelland, IA, the fourth of eight children.

At the age of 22, Fran joined the WACS during World War II, serving for four years.  While stationed at Camp Kilmer, NJ, she met her husband Gerald "Jerry" Caulfield.  They were married in the base chapel on October 4, 1946.  During the thirty years Jerry served in the Army, the family moved around the world, being stationed in Japan, Kansas, Georgia and Germany before settling in Fargo, ND in 1963.  It was here they raised their five children.

Fran had many interests.  She was an avid gardener and bird watcher.  A skilled seamstress, she made her own clothes and many of her children's clothing, including her daughter Pat's wedding dress.  Loving the world of books and children, she enjoyed volunteering for over thirty years at the Holy Spirit School library.  She also spent many hours volunteering at Holy Spirit Church where she and Jerry have been members for 48 years.

She is survived by her husband and five children:  Jerry, of Fargo; Patricia (Leonard) Kotta of Fargo; Matthew of Moorhead, MN; David of Hugo, MN; Steven (Lisa) of Burnsville, MN; by her twelve grandchildren: Jonathan and Janelle Kotta; Caitlin, Michael, Kenneth and Cara Caulfield; Nicole and Ashley Deyo; Dallas, Joseph, Logan and Andrew Caulfield; and by two brothers: Don Yochem of Fairbanks, AK and Gene (Karen) Yochem of Olympia, WA.  She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and her sister.

Fran's family would like to thank the staff at Rosewood on Broadway.  The family would also like to express their thanks to Hospice of the Red River Valley.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to the library at Holy Spirit Elementary School, 1441 8th St N, Fargo, ND 58102 or to Hospice of the Red River Valley, 1701 38th St S, Ste 101, Fargo, ND 58103.

  2. Fort Pierre South DakotaSo sorry to learn of Mrs. Caulfield’s passing. I have many memories of her from years back, and enjoyed her “snickerdoodle” cookies! She was a very nice lady, and one who will be greatly missed. May God bless you all. Prayers…..Cathy (Robbins) Johnson

  3. I feel so blessed to have known Fran. She was a delight to have as a patient and I looked forward to every visit we had. She’d start out telling me the rules in good humor: that I was not to find anything wrong and she was doing the best that she could possibly do! Over the years our chats covered many topics. She was so proud of her family. She spoke of her marriage and complete admiration and thanks to Gerald for all he had done for her. At our last visit as her health was deteriorating, she still giggled and understood when I greeted her and mentioned that the one with the beauty and the brains goes first – which of course was her! She still had that twinkle in her eyes! And that’s what I will remember. I can only hope I grow old to be the sweet little lady she was. Thanks for sharing her with me! I will miss her dearly.
