Born in New York City to Fred and Virginia (Bailey) Clark on March 21, 1944. He died of heart failure due to exposure to Agent Orange.

After the War, (WWII), his parents returned to the Indian reservations of New Mexico and Arizona, eventually settling in Utah where he grew up and graduated high school. He served in the U.S. Army as an Infantry officer and pilot in Vietnam, attached to the Military Assistance Command Vietnam Studies and Observation Group (Also known as MACV SOG). He flew 534 missions throughout Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos and participated in a number of ground operations.

He married Linda while in the service and together they raised six children and have nine grandchildren.

After the service he returned to the reservation and worked on the patrol for a couple of years. While on the patrol he was offered a job to patrol on the northern border for the U.S. Customs Service. He was then offered a position with the Federal Aviation Administration, managing the North Dakota District. During his time with the agency, he flew 38 different types of aircraft from hot air balloons, sea planes, helicopters, jets, and turbo props.

After his retirement from the agency, he pursued a career in home building, constructing two housing developments and remodeling over 60 homes.

Although his primary interest was the welfare of his family, he enjoyed all that life had to offer. His travels took him to Europe, Australia, Asia, Hawaii, Mexico, and other parts of the world.

He enjoyed the many summers spent with his family at the lake home on West McDonald Lake in Minnesota, and the winters with his family in the mountains of Colorado at their ski home. Fred was a member of the National Ski Patrol for over 32 years, receiving a national appointment in 2005.

Fred was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic church, serving on the church council for several years.

He is survived by Linda, his wife and life partner for over 56 years. Together they had children Bruce, Barbara, Daniel, Greg, Jana, and Alex, eight grandchildren, one great granddaughter, and one great grandson.

  5. What a joy it has been to know Fred Clark, and to work with him on the Fargo AirSho committee. Fred served on the committee for perhaps over 20 years and in many different capacities. He was one of those reliable people that gets things done and done right. His many different skills in aviation, construction, and supervising people made him a very valuable member of the committee. and his gentle demeanor made him a joy to work with. He was a very valuable part of the Fargo AirSho committee, We will miss him and will remember him as we approach the next airshow just a few days away.

  7. Our sympathy to the Clark family. I worked with Fred many years at the FAA in Fargo. He was my Trainer and Supervisor. He made the job fun as we spent many hours flying and traveling together! His popular saying was “you need to get the big picture”. Always full of stories !

  8. I worked with Fred in Fargo for many years. We had a great time, and it was a pleasure and a privilege to know him. My condolences to Linda and his family. He will certainly be missed.

  9. Fred was a great friend who had a sincere interest in children. He helped our Rough Rider Service Club find left over winter clothes left at the Detroit Lakes & Alexandria ski pavilions. These clothes were picked up by Linda & Fred, brought back to Fargo & distributed to Fargo grade schools. We will miss his friendly face and his generous gift of his time in service to others.

  10. Sympathies to the entire Clark family. I was never fortunate enough to meet Fred however I consider Greg a close friend. Thoughts and prayers G to your family dealing with your loss. Love ya buddy.

  11. I worked with Fred at Nardini in Fargo for about a year. He worked in the shop and I was in the office. I recall that he had employment at the southern border for security and had been in the military, but being the humble person he was, I had no idea until now all that he accomplished. He would have lunch with his wife often, I remember. He was also a friend to Allen in our office who was dealing with a serious health issue. Fred would bring donuts for himself and Al every day. I’m certain Fred is at peace now. Blessings to his family.

  12. I worked with Fred Clark on the Fargo AirSho committee for many years. We secured transportation for entertainers as well as other duties as assigned, so we were always busy. Fred was not only reliable- the type of person who got things done, but he was also a very good and dear friend. As Vietnam veterans, former national ski patrollers, and pilots we enjoyed endless conversations about shared experiences and adventures. Fred was a dear friend and colleague who will be greatly missed.

  13. I came to Fargo in 1997 as the new Manager of the FAA’s FSDO. Fred was the Acting Manager at that time. Before I even set foot in the office Fred and Linda took us out for dinner at a great steak place. Over the next 3 years Fred was an invaluable managing partner with me. He made my job much easier. I am a better person because of my association with Fred. A sad moment for me.
