Gabriel (Gabe) Jan Olson passed away on April 18th, 2024, at the Fairview University Hospital in Minneapolis Minnesota surrounded by his adoring wife, and loving family, after a courageous battle with congenital heart disease.

Gabe was born on January 25th, 1971, in Bismarck, ND to Gerald and Joyce (Smith) Olson.
Gabe, and his four sisters, Eve, Joy, Geraldine, and June grew up on a small family farm outside Wilton ND, where the family raised livestock and crops. Gabe’s rural upbringing gave him a deep appreciation for nature and wildlife, and he often reminisced about the times he spent hiking, hunting and fishing in the Cooley with his sisters or buddies.

A machinist by trade, Gabe was self-taught and took great pride in his work; often pointing out buildings and other structures he had a small part in constructing. Gabe worked for True North Steel, McNeilius Steel, and most recently Integrity Steel in Mapleton, ND before his retirement in 2021.

Gabe was loved and admired by many people for his easy-going nature, sense of humor, work ethic, and how he was always willing to help a friend. He was a devoted to the people he cared about, and he had a nickname for everyone. But Gabe’s own personal hero was his dad Gerald, and Gabe often remarked about how much he loved and missed him. Gabe and his four sisters remained close as adults. They supported each other through difficult times; often called each other just to see how they were doing; and enjoyed each other’s company during holidays and family events. Gabe passed his dad’s love, and wisdom on to his sons Jake (Sonny-Boy or sometimes Junior) and Matthew (The Rabbit), and later his grandson Carter (Grandson) whose artwork was often proudly displayed on the refrigerator. In 2020 his granddaughter Gabriella (Baby Girl) arrived and promptly twisted Gabe’s heart around her tiny fingers.

Gabe was adventurous and active and loved being outside. In addition to hunting and fishing Gabe also enjoyed skeet shooting, riding his bike, and barbequing, but all of that took second to his true passion: Ice fishing. As soon as the ice was thick enough, you could find Gabe in his fish house, out on a frozen lake, in the middle of nowhere. Some of his happiest memories were of misadventures he had with his family and friends.

Gabe met his current wife, Jaime, through a dating site in 2015. It wasn’t love at first sight, but she did agree to go ice fishing with him; Gabe thought it was a solid beginning for a romance. As time passed Gabe and Jaime became a devoted and loving couple who brought out the best in each other. The couple enjoyed going out for dinner. Traveling-mostly to Bismarck/Mandan or Garrison to see family. Jaime dragged Gabe into every antique store she could find; he pretended not to like it. Gabe loved to cook, and often treated Jaime to creations inspired by things he’d seen on his cooking shows. Jaime’s dog Vera the Wonder Puggle often got to tag along with Gabe and Jaime on their adventures. From the beginning, Gabe had a special relationship with Vera. He would sing her puggle songs he made up on the fly, play puggle soccer, harass her, get her paws; and sneak her potatoes when Jaime wasn’t looking.

Gabe is survived by his loving wife Jaime (Altringer) of Fargo, son Jake (Codi) Olson of Mandan, Son Matthew Olson of Bismarck, Grandson Carter Michael Weichel Olson, Granddaughter Gabriella Hollan Olson; Sisters, Eve (Larry) Buchholz of Wilton, Geraldine (Joe) Helmer of Moorhead, Joy (Scott) Pace of Bismarck and June (Mike) Palmer of Bismarck; Aunt Betty (Dana) Taylor of Colorado; his many adored nieces and nephews; his special fur baby, Vera; many other loving relatives and friends.

Gabe was preceded in death by his parents: Gerald Olson and Joyce Olson.

Guestbook

  1. I am so sorry to hear Gabriel is gone. I know that now he does have that horn my dad always joked with him about. (Gabriel where is your horn?) I think it was Geraldine that said , “Tiny, can you tell your dad that Gabriel doesn’t have a horn?” I explained it was referencing the Bible and the Angel Gabriel. He was a neat guy, always so happy when he was a kid! Melody Irvin

  2. Hugs and prayers 🙏 to Gabe’s family and friends.

Gabe’s sister, Geraldine Helmer is my best friend and she was very close to her brother. God bless you all during this difficult time.

  3. We are so sorry for you and your family’s loss. Thinking of you and praying for comfort in the days to come.
