Gene E. “Nice guy” Peterson (August 27, 1936-April 25, 2026) passed away peacefully at St. Catherine’s nursing home.

Gene was born in Moes, ND, and lived in the Enderlin, Sheldon area until adulthood. He was a proud veteran having served in the Air Force in Tripoli, North Africa, during the Korean War. After his return to ND, he worked for 29 years for Northwestern Bell as a microwave tech, cable tech ending as a cable supervisor. Some of the things he was proud of are the 8 years he spent as the President of the CWA local 7303, being appointed head of the Fargo Civil Service board, where he stayed for several years, and being the Democratic nominee for the state House of Representatives. The thing that only came second to his love for his family was his love for the Lakes. He built a cabin on Lake Ida that he created as a place of joy for family and friends. He was given the nickname “nice guy” by the people he worked with, and it defined his life. He will be missed.

He is succeeded in life by his brothers, Wayne Peterson (Karen) and Larry Peterson (Judy); his sister, Barbara Perkins; his son-in-law, Kevin Early; and his son, Guy Peterson (Helen, Jeffrey, and Jami), stepdaughters Nancy and Connie; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Joyce McDougal; his 1st wife, Yvonne Sheets; his daughter with Yvonne, Kristi Peterson Ramirez; his 2nd wife, Mary Peterson; and his third wife, Gloria Cook.

His prayer service will be on Tuesday from 11 am to 1 pm, followed by his burial at 1:30. For those who cannot attend in person, it will be livestreamed at boulgerfuneralhome.com.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to Fargo Rape and Abuse Crisis Center.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Gene was my boss for two years at one time, and he was one of the best bosses I ever had of the many that came and went over the years. He was just a great guy in every way, and he will be missed by so many people. He really was a “nice guy”, and I remember us all calling him that. It was the perfect nickname for him.

  2. When I was a teenager, about 16 years old, Mary was pregnant with Guy. Both Gene and Mary worked and summer came and they needed someone to stay with Kristie, she was around 6 years old. So I (Mary Jo Ernst) stayed with the Peterson’s for several weeks. I watched Kristie and made dinner every night. Mary had morning sickness all day everyday and if they went to eat out – she would be sick before they received the food. If we cooked at home – she was sick before it was ready to eat. Mary was hospitalized a couple of times for dehydration. So, if I cooked and had it ready to sit down and eat as soon as they walked in the door from work- Mary could eat! That was the best solution for everyone! Yes, we had good times at the lake, but the time I spent with them as part of the family was very special.
