The family of George Edward Hill is saddened to announce his passing. George Hill passed away on May 16, 2025, under the care of Hospice.

George Edward Hill was born on June 15, 1934, in Wahpeton, ND, to Edward and Emma (Hess) Hill. He was the second eldest of seven kids. His childhood was filled with adventures, and he even played the fiddle and performed with his brother Jim on a local radio station.

George married the love of his life, Ione Tronson, on August 27, 1954, at the Highland Lutheran Church near Cummings, ND. They made their home in rural Mayville, ND, and later moved to Fargo, ND. George drove truck for Swedberg Trucking, and then worked for NDSU as an equipment operator for many years where he later retired from.

Throughout their marriage, George and Ione enjoyed traveling to many places including Hawaii, California, and Canada among many other places. On one trip with their camper, they stopped at a random location in Perham, MN, and on a whim asked to park on someone’s property. This started a long friendship and was the beginning of more than 30 years worth of summers spent at the Golden Eagle Campground where George helped build many of the campsites and assisted in caring for the campground.

George lost his love, Ione, in 2007, and a few years later, he moved to the Trollwood Village apartments in north Fargo, where he spent the remainder of his life.

George was preceded in death by his parents; Edward and Emma Hill, his wife; Ione (Tronson) Hill, his children; Baby Rorie and Geoffery Allen, his sister; Edna Claire, and his niece; Jackie Claire.

He is survived by his brothers, James Hill (Coon Rapids, MN), Lloyd (Bob) (Jane) Hill of Puget Sound, WA, and John (Donna) Hill of Fargo, ND; his sisters Ann (Eugene) Jetvig of Hawley, MN, and Betty (Frank) Crabtree of Georgetown, MN. He is also survived by his grandson Justin (Jessica) Hill of Hazen, ND; and his granddaughter Georgia (Stephen) Fletcher. He is also survived by many great- and great-greatgrandchildren, nieces and nephews, and friends.

George’s family wants to also say a special thanks to Stephanie from Hospice who helped care for him and formed a very special bond with him.

  1. Jeff, I’m so sorry to hear about your Dad. He used to give me so much grief when we worked at NDSU and anytime I would see him. I remember the fun times when we were young and would visit at your place or when you guys would come out to Harwood. He will certainly be missed.

  2. George taught me so many things, he showed all the “young bucks” how things go and work around the shop. He didn’t say a lot at times but when he gave you that look you came running. When he spoke everyone listened, he was a great role model for doing the job right. Take care sir, I’m glad I got to work with you.
