April 1, 1942 ~ April 11, 2026

Born in: Clinton , Minnesota
Resided in: Horace, North Dakota

Gloreen Marie (Carlson) Maxwell passed away during the afternoon of Saturday, April 11, after a long battle with two different cancers. She died peacefully, surrounded by Lyle, her husband of 54 years; Lisa, Chad, and Lori, her children; and Jourdan, a very compassionate person and excellent hospice nurse.

Gloreen was born in her family’s farmhouse near Clinton, Minnesota, on April 1, 1942, to Elvin and Elsie (Seehusen) Carlson. Gloreen was the fifth of seven children born in the family home. In her grade school years, Gloreen attended a country school three miles from the family farm and in her high school years, she attended Clinton High School. During her high school years, Gloreen worked with, Marlys and Janice, her sisters, at a local Clinton cafe which happened to be run by sisters not related to Gloreen. After graduating high school, Gloreen moved to St. Cloud to work and stay with Janice, her sister, and is where Gloreen met, Eddie Haas, whom she married in September 1962.

Shortly after marrying Eddie, they moved to the Fargo, North Dakota area, where Gloreen worked as a waitress at the Highway Host and attended business school in the evenings. During her marriage to Eddie, Gloreen enjoyed the birth of her children and the foster babies she was able to care for the State of North Dakota. Gloreen continued caring for foster babies even after she and Eddie divorced in 1970 and in June of 1972, she married Lyle Maxwell. After marrying, Gloreen and Lyle enjoyed the blending of their families with their six children: Lisa, Joby, Lori, Gene, Greg, and Clyde. In November of 1972, the newly blended family welcomed a beautiful baby boy, Chad, into their home, whom Gloreen fostered for several months until the whole family adopted Chad in 1973. During the next several years, Gloreen enjoyed her big family, but no longer took care of foster babies. She worked at the West Fargo Pump and Lift as an administrative assistant. Gloreen left the Pump and Lift to work for the City of West Fargo Street Department as an administrative assistant until she retired after 35 years.
Gloreen is preceded in death by her parents, Elvin and Elsie (Seehusen) Carlson; her former husband, Eddie Haas; brother, Virgil Carlson; son-in-law, Kevin Beach; son, Joby Haas; sisters, Maryls (Carlson) Athey; granddaughter, Courtney Jane Beach.
Gloreen is sorely missed and survived by, her husband Lyle Maxwell; siblings, Verlin (Kay) Carlson, Janice (Carlson) McDonnell, Rod (Anne) Carlson, Steve (Joanie) Carlson; children, Lisa (Haas) Beach, Chad (Christina) Maxwell, Lori Haas-Olson (David Olson), Gene Maxwell, Greg (Penny) Maxwell, and Clyde (Dena) Maxwell; grandchildren, Angie, Gabe, Christopher, DJ, Luke, Robin, Crystal, Jimmy, Andrew, Ethan, and Manda; Many great-grandchildren, Cousins, Nieces and nephews; her close friends Renae Skarie, and Julian Bernath.

Gloreen’s husband and children wish to extend their extraordinary gratitude to the wonderful hospice nurses and hospice aides who assisted Gloreen, Lyle, and her children during the final weeks of her life—they were nothing short of miraculous! Gloreen’s family request that any memorial contributions be given to Sanford Hospice of Fargo.

Gloreen’s immediate family will have a private service on Friday, April 17.
