Born in: Valley City, North Dakota
Resided in: Fargo, North Dakota

Gordon Jewett, Hunter ND died at his home on March 11, 2025.

Gordon was born in Valley City, ND, the first child of Guy and Edith Jewett, nee Anderson.

He attended Booth school and helped his dad on their farm until he left school. After that he worked for local farmers and at the Rogers grain elevator. His enlistment in the North Dakota Army National Guard began his military career which spanned 35 years 11 months and 7 days. Part of that time he worked as a mess sergeant feeding his troops. His pork chops and sauerkraut sealed the deal when he asked Karen to marry him! He was deployed by the governor of North Dakota to assist in the flood fight in Grand Forks and to do snow removal in the western part of the state. Another deployment sent him to Honduras on a road building mission where the local children captured his heart.

For a few years Gordon operated Jewett’s Diesel Shop in Rogers ND where his mechanic and welding skills served many of the locals. The shop was also a gathering place where coffee and gossip could be enjoyed.

After mandatory retirement from the military at the age of 60, Gordon worked for John Deere Air Seeder Manufacturing in Valley City for 10 years welding, training new employees and making new friends.

Gordon married Treonne McMillan Pederson in Devils Lake ND. She brought her two children, Shelly and Lannie, to the marriage. They had a son, Robbie, together and Gordon adopted Shelly and Lannie.

Karen had two children as well, Allen and Carie, from her first marriage.

So, what happens when two souls with wounds from their first marriages decide to try again? Gordon Jewett and Karen Hansen Lindemann jumped back in December of 1989 when on impulse, they grabbed two of Karen’s good neighbors and headed to the courthouse in Valley City. They didn’t have children together, but Gordon gave Karen the ultimate gift when, at the age of 75, he agreed to move with her to the farmstead where she had grown up. And that is where he died.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Edith; his adopted son, Lannie; his sister, Annette and her husband, Ervin Grossman; and his brother, Kenneth Jewett.

He leaves behind his wife of 35 years, Karen; his stepson, Allen Lindemann and his wife Heidi; 3 grandchildren, Brody, Cameron, and Danica, who reside in AZ; his stepdaughter, Carie Nygaard, (whom he taught to ride her bike without training wheels) and her husband Dustan; and 2 grandchildren, Lily and Fynn, who live within walking distance; his adopted daughter, Shelly Sizer in Bismarck; his son, Robbie Jewett; his granddaughter, Ashley Mooridian and his great grandson Aiden, all living in Valley City, ND; a brother, Vernon (Doris Jewett, his sister Janice (Gordy) Klein and a brother Gene (Cheryl) Jewett who was born on Gordon’s 15th birthday. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews and friends.

Gatherings will be held to share memories and to celebrate Gordon’s life.

Gordon, my husband tor 35 years, died at our home in Hunter, ND on Tuesday March 11, 2025.

Last Friday at Bethany as I lay with him, we resolved any conflicts we had had and there was only one in 35 years. Okay, truth here, I apologized for being so angry at him for his handling of an issue we were at odds about. And I believe he forgave me.

I signed him out of Bethany, against medical advice, on the 11th. The Hunter ambulance, which had taken him to Fargo numerous times, brought him back home. A big and bigger thank you to Donna and Mark (or is that Mark and Donna? Inside joke) for attending to him.

After the hospice nurses had “tucked him in” (I just love this expression) our dog Watson gave him kisses and welcomed him home. And then said goodbye to him a couple of hours later.

His passing was without pain or anxiety. He simply stopped breathing. I’m sure he was happy to spend a couple hours with me and Watson at our farm home before starting on the next leg of his journey.

My heart is so filled with peace and gratitude and blessings and love. There is scarcely any room for pain. I wish the same serenity for each of you.

This pic of Gordon was taken at our cabin on the lake in MN in 1995.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Gordy and the whole Jewett family are good people. I have always enjoyed visiting with any Jewett family member.

  2. My sincere condolences to the family. Gordon was an awesome soldier and I was proud to serve with him. Rest in Peace.

  3. Gordan was a great guy I got to know him while working at OMS6 when he would stop by regularly to visit. In our thoughts and prayers.

  4. On August 15, 1977 Gordie and I decided to celebrate his 40th Birthday with “dinner and “A” drink” at the Rhein Main AFB, Germany NCO club. Shortly after setting foot on base, they went into lockdown, to include closing the NCO club. We wandered, found an open door to a barracks, each had a beer from a vending machine (didn’t have correct change for more) As soon as the lockdown ended,(several hours later) we hopped a bus back to Kaiserslautern, ending the birthday boys celebration! Nearly every time we saw each other thereafter we reminisced about his 40th birthday. Long story! Long time ago! Long friendship! It is so good to be counted as a friend of such a wonderful man and great American soldier and patriot. RIP Gordie!

  5. Every memory I have of Gordy are ones of respect and appreciation. Gordy was so good to me during my years in Lisbon and Oakes. He was always “in the barrel” with us; helpful, teaching, and kind. Such a good guy, as were Vern and Kenny, and Shelly to be sure. Good people. Rest in Peace Gordy. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

  9. So sorry to hear of Gordy’s death. You know I have worked with Gordy for over 25 years in the shop in Valley City. Gordy w as always good to me and we got along good. After retirement we kept in contact for the last 18 years keeping up on what was happing in our lives. Karen I know was a life saver for him a very special find for him. The last time I was able to see them was when they came to my wife’s funeral, which was special when I needed to see Special friends. Over the years I learned a great deal from Gordy. I will always remember him, an his family as they are really special people. Let me know when then the time of the services.
