Hattie Knotek Hunter
Hattie Knotek Hunter, 100, Fargo, ND and formerly of Milton, died Monday, May 8, 2017 at Rosewood on Broadway. She was born in Pisek, ND on October 11, 1916 to Alois and Anna (Capouch) Knotek. She attended school in Lankin and Pisek, graduating from high school in 1932. She later went to work in the Milton area where she met Charles Wesley Hunter. They were married October 30, 1935.
Charlie and Hattie farmed in Milton, spent some time in California and moved to Washington State in 1950. They lived there until 1956 when they returned to Milton to farm. After retiring from farming they co-owned, with their son Chuck and his wife, the Hunter’s Furniture and Hardware Store from 1973 to 1978.
Hattie was a member of the Milton Presbyterian church, and the Milton Legion Auxiliary. She was also active in Milton Hilltoppers Senior Citizens Club. Hattie was very social, loved playing cards, and was a loving mother of seven children, and a grandmother, great and great-great-grandmother. Her home was always open to friends and family and she provided a temporary home for many years to the directors of the Missoula Children’s Theater. She also provided a home for Maki Hota while she was a teacher with an exchange program in 1997-1998. Anyone who experienced Hattie’s hospitality knew what it was to feel completely at home in someone else’s home. Hattie never failed to find the good in everyone she met.
Hattie is survived by her daughters, Charlotte Soli of Langdon, ND; Judith Gustafson, Fargo; Luanne (Gerald) Hipsher, Paris, KY; and sons, Charles (Linda) Burnsville, MN; and Robert (Arlene) Dilworth, MN. She is also survived by twenty grandchildren; forty-one great-grandchildren; and fourteen great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Kathleen Sundlie; daughter, Mary (Frank) Ingulsrud; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; one daughter-in-law; and five sons-in-law.
Memorials preferred to Hospice of the Red River Valley or the Milton Cemetery Association.

So sorry to hear about Hattie’s passing. She was such a wonderful lady and I have many good memories of her tooling around Milton on her bicycle. I always saw her with a smile on her face and she had an innate ability to connect with people of any generation. She lived life and although I have not seen her in many years, pictures that were posted on Facebook seemed to show she continued to enjoy her family and friends.
My sympathy to Hattie’s family. She will be missed. I remember her and her bicycle. What an adventurous lady she was. She lived a long life obviously loved very much by her very large family. Keep her in your heart and memory.
I love you Grandma Hattie. Forever and always my ray of sunshine and songbird. My hero and role model. Sleep well, my love. Wish I could kiss your sweet cheeks one last time
Thank you for sharing Hattie with us at Rosewood. She was a beautiful soul that always made us smile and laugh. I am going to miss her hugs and cheek kisses, her singing, and that sweet smile that always made us feel special. She will be missed but I am so thankful for all of the memories of her. <3
A solid woman who will forever live in my heart. Many happy days , as she provided the sunshine. A wonderful story teller and the matriarch.
Lots of memories of Hattie at the Presbyterian Church and other events. She and my mom served lots of bingo lunches together. She was a fun lady.
My sympathies to the family. I have only great memories if Hattie. She was a genuine, caring, loving person. A real sweetheart. When she would come to the courthouse to visit Charlotte she was always so chipper and made up. When I think of her, I think “when I am old I will wear purple”. She always wore color and usually had jewelry and a scarf around her neck. She was truly a gem. Pretty sure you are dancing up there because you have no more pain. May the memories of Hattie stay alive!!!
What wonderful memories we have of Gramma Hattie who took us in and shared her family with us when we were so far from our own families. She was one of a kind and profoundly affected so many with her love, wit, faith and positive attitude. She took our daughter around town in the back of her bicycle and will always be her Gramma Hattie. Sending our love to all the family.

I will always remember, and hold dear to my heart, the many times Hattie opened up her home to the Milton Presbyterian congregation in the winter. She always had coffee ready for us, a big smile, and hugs. I was privileged to serve that wonderful congregation for 14 years and remember each of them fondly. Hattie and I were huggers. I know God had his arms open wide in love for Hattie, who showed His love to so many. May you all, as her loving family feel blessed by all the fantastic memories God has left you with. .
Grandma Hattie you were there for me at a tough time in my life and spread your own type of sunshine in my life; the type that shows us that there is good in every person and that every circumstance can be useful for our learning and character: we went on a crazy tuna fish and green bean diet!! and you talked to me in my own teen language and I will never forget how you encircled me into the ‘family’ and made me feel very special and valued just for myself. Until I see you in person, know that I love you and your whole family reflect the same love to others that you so exemplified. Love to all the friends and relatives of this dearest, funny, sweet lady.

However, you are not alone for the bible says “Jehovah is close to the broken hearted, he saves those that are crushed in spirit (Psalms 34:18) I hope these words are of comfort and may the love of your family help cope with this loss.
