Hazel E. VanArnam, 93, formerly of Kindred, ND, died at Edgewood Vista, Fargo, ND on August 9, 2011.
Hazel Elizabeth Marion Quilitz was born in Colfax, ND on March 16, 1918 to Theodore and Kittie Quilitz. At the age of two her parents moved to the farm in Barrie Township where they lived for eighteen years. She attended grade school at Barrie No 1 and she graduated from Walcott, ND high school in 1936. While in high school she sang in the sextet and played basketball.
She worked in various homes and also in Minneapolis. She worked for 16 years in the food service in the Kindred school and also cooked in migrant programs for 16 years. Because of her love of children, she taught Sunday School for years.
She was united in marriage to Melvin Stenseth in June 1939 at the Barrie Congregational Church. They lived on the Stenseth farm near Kindred. After Melvin died, she married Edson L. VanArnam in 1987 at the Barrie Church. They continued to lived on her farm until Edson's health failed and he spent 3 ½ years at Manor Care Nursing Home in Fargo. Hazel moved to Leonard in the fall of 2002 after 63 years on her farm.
She was devoted to her family, her church, gardening and flowers and enjoyed dancing whenever she could.
Hazel is survived by her children; Charles (Joanne) Stenseth, Detroit Lakes, MN, Judith (Keith) Matthiensen, Leonard, ND and Scott (Penny) Stenseth, Fargo, ND and 6 grandchildren , 7 great grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 3 step great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
Her parents preceded her in death as well as her son, James, her husbands, Melvin and Edson, her brothers, George, Gordon, Leon, and sisters, Kathleen and Muriel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Barrie Congregational Church or any organization of your choice.
