Helen Aho
March 21, 2010 ~ October 26, 2010
Helen A. Aho, age 86, Fargo, died Sunday March 21 in the Palliative Care Unit, MeritCare Hospital, Fargo. Helen was born October 26, 1923 to Ellen and Olaf Lund, who were both Norwegian immigrants. Helen grew up in Minneapolis, MN along with her two older sisters, Elaine and Lucille, and her niece Janice. Helen enjoyed school and had a reputation for being the tomboy of the family because she loved to spend time outdoors. Helen and her sisters interrupted their education to help support the family when her father died during the Depression. Helen eventually returned to school, earned her high school diploma, and held office support positions at the Bureau of Engraving in Minneapolis. Helen and Olaf T. Aho were married August 13, 1949 when they eloped to Northwood Iowa. They returned home, announced their marriage, and made their home in Minneapolis for several years. Helen and Ole both loved to travel; a big summer driving vacation, usually to the western U.S. was a regular part of their entire married life. In 1957 the couple moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming, where their daughter, Ellen, was born the following year. The family then lived in Denver, Colorado and eventually returned to Minneapolis. Helen and Ole moved to Fargo in 2002, where they appreciated being part of the Riverview Place community and spending time with their daughter and son-in-law. Helen is survived by her daughter, Ellen Aho, and son-in-law, Richard Gilmore, Moorhead, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, and husband, Olaf.
