Helen Joyce (Joy) Stevenson was born at home at Dallas, South Dakota on October 3, 1930. She was the third of eight children born to Elmer and Hazel Bell. She lived on a farm until she entered high school where she enjoyed cheerleading and watching her brothers play basketball
and graduated with honors from Fairfax High School, Fairfax, South Dakota. She then earned an elementary teacher’s certificate from Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, South Dakota. She taught in the rural schools of Gregory and Bon Homme County in South Dakota until 1954.

Joyce married Donald W Stevenson on December 31, 1950 at Fairfax, South Dakota. To this union two daughters were born: Carol Joyce and Janet Rahe. The family resided in Springfield, South Dakota until 1967 when they moved to Wahpeton, North Dakota where her husband was Dean of Trades at NDSCS. Joyce returned to college and earned an associate degree in accounting and business management from NDSCS. The last 12 years before her retirement she assisted the Office Manager at Smith Motors, Inc. in Wahpeton. Prior to that she was director of payroll and personnel at Wil-Rich Manufacturing for 10 years, worked at St. Francis Nursing Home business office for 4 years and 2 years for Farmers Union Insurance. In 2009, Don and Joyce moved to One Oak Place in Fargo, North Dakota to be closer to family and to enjoy more time with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Following Don’s passing in 2020, Joyce moved to Bethany on University.

Joyce was a very shy, reserved person with a generous and caring heart for others. Her family was most important to her. She spent much of her time making and sewing things for her two daughters and their families. She loved to sew, crochet, knit and do crafty projects. She found much pleasure in sharing her pieces of work with family and friends. She enjoyed being a volunteer for Project Linus and made many blankets for them. She loved poetry, reading and working crossword puzzles and Sudoku. She also enjoyed her daily walks. She was an excellent cook and baker. The holidays were full of a variety of foods and goodies. She took delight in her family being together and enjoying time at the dinner table. In her later years after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s, Joyce overcame many adversities with this disabling disease which took more than anyone knows yet Joyce persevered. She was a gallant woman with a strong heart.

Joyce was an active member of United Church of Christ of Wahpeton, North Dakota and assisted whenever possible with Women’s Fellowship activities, served on the Altar Guild and Memorial Committee and a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star. After Don and Joyce moved to Fargo, they attended First Congregational Church of Fargo, North Dakota and enjoyed assisting with setup of communion whenever needed.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Aunt Joy was my mother’s only sister. Before my mother passed away from cancer at age 50 Joy made a promise to her that she would remember my dad and us three kids, which she did for many years. She even sent cards and gifts to our children. Aunt Joy was a kind and thoughtful person her entire life. Heaven gained another angel. I’m sure her and my mom are laughing and snorting together now! Ha.

  2. Carol Janet & families,
Please accept my sincere sympathy on the passing of your Mom. She was one of my first Avon customers in Wahpeton 35 years ago and it was such a joy to see her and visit with her. Truly one of the kindest souls on earth. Cherish your special memories!.

  3. So sorry for the loss of Joyce, she was a sweet soul. I had the privilege of working with Joyce and her hearing needs. Although our visits were brief, I enjoyed our time together. She carried herself with so much grace and kindness. God bless you all during this difficult time.

  4. So very sorry for your loss Carol. Our sincere sympathy to you and your Sister and to all of the Grandkuds and Great-grandson. I know you will all miss your Mom. May God wrap his arms around all of you at this most difficult time.
Love and Prayers, Darlene and Harold.

  5. Carol, Janet and families
Our prayers are with you for your loss. May your many happy memories together help during this time. Our family is thinking of you.
    Dave, Gail and Family

    • Janet and Carol, my sincere condolences to you and your families. I never knew your Mom very well, but I sure enjoyed seeing and talking with your Dad. Peace to both of you.

  6. Dear Carol, Janet and families – Memories fade after 60+ years, but not when I picture your mom in her kitchen. She always looked so beautiful, kind and happy. I always thought you two girls had the prettiest hair, anklets and dresses in the whole elementary school. I imagine your mom made at least most of your dresses. I remember your dad, too. (In my mind, he was as handsome as Samantha’s husband Darrin on Bewitched.) Please know that you and your parents were part of the happy memories of growing up in the Mayberry that Springfield used to be. Hugs to you all as you carry on your mother’s love and grace. Cindy Tolsma

  7. Know that my thoughts and prayers are with you today. I worked with Joyce more that 40 years ago before moving to Arizona and she left a lasting impression on my life. She was one of the kindest and most genuine people I’ve ever known. She bought a picture of a lighthouse that I’d painted and when her and Don downsized she took the time and effort to mail that picture back to me with a letter saying she couldn’t dispose of it and thought I should have it back to enjoy. It hangs in our house to this day and I’m reminded of her whenever I see It. That was just how Joyce was. I pray that God will wrap his arms around each one of you as you say your final goodbyes.

  8. Sweet, kind, quiet, friendly, wonderfully warm and lovely and Faith-filled are my memories of Joyce. I was lucky enough to receive some of Joyce’s beautifully made gifts. She was so talented and her baking …delicious! I always looked forward to their Christmas card and letter as they were always filled with a little laughter, fun, gratefulness and joy. What a beautiful life she lived and what a special woman she was. Carol, your mom will always be with you and she will send you those little reminders, too. Treasure them! 💗Sending all my love and prayers to all and Joyce, our new Angel in Heaven. 😇❤️ God’s Blessings 🙏🏼

  9. Kind, caring, loving, and perhaps as I have heard many times, a bit shy. Aunt Joy always had an unspoken way about her that shined bright through her light as she entered a room.

As a child with a boundless amount of energy, she always caused me pause with her comforting/loving glance. She forever held a special place in my heart ❤️

Eternally resting now as our Lord has brought her back home
