Herb passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2005, at his home in Hillsboro, at the age of 78.
Herb was born on November 20,1926, the son of John and Olga (Huemoeller) Schlichtmann, near Kelso, North Dakota. He was baptized on January 16, 1927, and moved with his family at an early age to the family farm in Bloomfield Township. He grew up on the farm, was confirmed on April 6, 1941, attended school at Bloomfield #1 and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1944. After his schooling, Herb worked on the family farm prior to his service in the United States Army. He proudly served from 1950 until his discharge in 1952, when he returned to the farm. Herb worked the land all of his life, continuing to be very active in farming all of his days. Herb was a life long member of St. John Lutheran Church where he served in many areas.
Herb is survived by his brother, Raymond (Sharon) Schlichtmann of Hillsboro; his sisters, Dorothy Hintz of Owatonna, Minnesota; Margaret Behnke of Grafton, Wisconsin; Ruth Rust of Hillsboro; and Shirley Taylor of Valparaiso, Indiana; his brother in law, Kenneth Ydstie of West Des Moines, Iowa; his sister in law, Ina Schlichtmann of Hillsboro; and several very special nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Herb was a very quiet, loving man who had a very special place in his heart for his niece, Bonnie and her children, Aurora, Erica, and Marissa; and his nephew, Randy and his children, Maggie, John, and Jacob.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Henry and Walter; and his sisters, Eleanor Ydstie and Vivian O?Donnell.
VISITATION: 5-7:30 PM Thursday at Wildeman Funeral Home in Hillsboro - and also one hour prior to the funeral in the church on Friday
PRAYER SERVICE: 7:30 PM Thursday at the funeral home
FUNERAL SERVICE: 10:30 AM Friday at St. John Lutheran Church in Hillsboro
BURIAL: St. John Cemetery, Rural Hillsboro
