Iona Anderson, 89, Hillsboro, ND passed away on Monday, October 5, 2020 at Sanford Long Term Care Center in Hillsboro, ND. Iona Marie Herbeck was born October 12, 1930 in rural Traill County, the daughter of Harry and Gurena (Smette) Herbeck. She grew up in Buxton, ND and graduated from Buxton High School. Iona married Tilman Anderson on December 1, 1950, settling in Hillsboro where they farmed until 1991. She was an active farmwife and a longtime member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Hillsboro. She enjoyed her family activities, as well as playing golf and cards with friends. Iona is survived by her children, Betty (Monte) Gregoire, Grand Forks, ND; Patricia Conley, Rio Verde, AZ; Les Anderson, Hillsboro, ND; Larry (Sherry) Anderson, Hillsboro, ND; her grandchildren, Tim Gregoire, Randi (Joe) Gibbs, Sarah (Sean Hostert) Kragness, Brooke Kragness, Heather Anderson, Tyler Anderson, Matt Anderson, and Kaitlin Anderson; and three great-granddaughters. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Joe Pulskamp, Hillsboro, ND and sister-in-law, Janet Anderson, Fargo, ND; and many nieces and nephews. Iona was preceded in death by her husband, Tilman, on June 20, 2010; her parents; grandson, Blake Kragness; brothers, Howard and Gordon Herbeck; sisters, Ruth Gustafson and Shirley Pulskamp. A private graveside service will be held at a later date at Riverside Cemetery, Hillsboro, ND. A special thanks to the staff at the nursing home and staff of Red River Valley Hospice.

  4. Our sympathy to your family, Iona and Tillman became good friends when we lived next door to them in Mesa. The friendship continued after Tillman passed away. We were able to visit occasionally in summer also since our summer home is near Cooperstown, ND.

  5. I’m so very sorry for your loss. Iona was always so sweet whenever I’d visit with my sister. I remember going out to the farm and helping her make lunch for the boys and Tilman..a huge pan of grilled cheese sandwiches in the oven. I know she will he greatly missed by all who were lucky enough to have known her.

    Sorry for the loss of your Mother. What an amazing lady and I’m so glad I got to know her. She would always stop over when I would be out mowing my lawn and visit with me. She would always ask how those kids doing? I truly believe that she had a special place in her heart and after I lost Renell she made sure the kids were doing ok..
