Irene Ann (Tootie) Flanagan, age 87, died Friday, November 11, 2022, at home. Irene was born on a farm near Oriska, ND on January 6, 1935, to William C. and Katherine A. (Cook) Winkler. She graduated from St Catherine’s High School in Valley City, ND and worked at a bank in Jamestown, ND and at Dakota Bank in Fargo, ND. Irene was united in marriage to Martin (Mick) Flanagan on October 17, 1959.

Irene was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and her life revolved around her immediate and extended family. Her favorite people were her grandchildren, and she was at her happiest attending their events and giving them her special handshake. Irene loved hosting holidays and every corner of her house was decorated for the next holiday. Irene was blessed with good friends, enjoyed traveling to visit family, shopping and going out to eat, and her smile was the biggest when she won the pot of monies during family card games. She spent many years leading Camp Fire, Cub Scout and Boy Scout troops; serving as an officer and President of Parent Teacher Associations; and volunteering in several roles for Church of the Nativity. Irene started working outside of the home cooking for her son and his NDSU fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon, in his senior year. She then began working in the deli at Case Wise Foods, moving to the service desk where she enjoyed helping people. She retired with 20 years of service in 2009. Irene was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and served as an officer for 12 years, ending as Regent.

Irene is survived by her husband, Mick; three children, Michael (Tania) Flanagan, Denise Flanagan, and Holly (Ryan) Younggren; four grandchildren, Bridey (Lane) Hendren, Lena Flanagan, Cody Younggren, and Colton Younggren; brothers- and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews; and great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings Shirley (Walter) Schwehr, William (Francis) Winkler, Georgena (Roland) Mohn, Fred Winkler, and Douglas (Pearl) Winkler.

The funeral will be at 2:00pm on Friday, November 18, at Church of the Nativity, Fargo. On Thursday, November 17, a rosary will be recited by the Catholic Daughters of America at 5:30pm, followed by visitation at 6:00pm, and a prayer service at 7:00pm at Boulger Funeral Home. Visitation will also be held at Nativity Church on Friday one hour prior to services. Burial will be at 5pm at St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Oriska, ND. Arrangements by Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Irene was always a good friend. She watched my one week old Nancy when I had to go out of town for a fun. I really enjoyed our birthday lunches when we caught up on the family news. She will be remembered always.

  2. Of course growing up across the street we got to see your mom often. When I was young I remember her making me a birthday cake for my birthday and on May Day she made airplanes out of the candy. We are so sorry for your loss. Keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers.

  3. Dear Mike, Tania, Lena and the Flanagan family, our sincere condolences on the passing of your mother Irene. What a wonderful human being she was. Sending our love from Hong Kong, Li, Midori, Thomas and Oliver

  4. Our heartfelt condolences to the Flanagan family for your loss. While we didn’t have the pleasure of knowing Irene, we know what a special person she was because she raised an amazing human being: Mike. Wishing the family peace and comfort during this unimaginable time.
Lots of love, Marina and Evan

  5. Memories of 20th street remain forever. We were down the street neighbors for a few years, and Nativity church friends also forever. She was the sweetest person. “May the Angels Welcome Irene to Paradise” well deserving.

  6. We extend our deepest sympathy to Irene‘s family and to Mick, She was such a sweet loving person, our visits were always short, but always so enjoyable. She leaves you all with many great memories and her love she showed for many years. You all are in hearts and prayers.

  7. Memories are precious and live on within our hearts. I have fond memories of my Aunt Irene from when I was a young girl at Grandparents Farm and from when my parents took us as young children to Fargo, North Dakota. May memories and thoughts of Irene Flanagan bring comfort and strength to all those who love Irene. May reading these messages surround you with peace.

  8. Dear Mike, Tania,

Deepest condolences to your entire family! May your mom’s transition was smooth and peaceful. My prayer are with you and your family.

  9. Dear Mike and Tania,
My sincerest condolences for the passing of your mother. My heart goes out to you and your family. Love. Debra
