James C. Dwyer, age 76, of West Fargo, ND died Tuesday, August 20, 2019 in his home surrounded by loved ones, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Jim was born in Fargo, ND on October 7, 1942 to Sylvester and Helen (Cain) Dwyer. He grew up in Moorhead and attended Shanley High School. Jim married Virginia McPherson on February 6, 1966 in Casselton, ND. They lived in Glen Burnie, MD while Jim served in the Army from 1967 – 1969 where they had their son, John. Following Jim’s service, they moved to Arthur, ND where they added 3 daughters to their family, Rebecca (Becky), Rachelle (Shelly), and Rosemarie (Rosie). Jim had several jobs before he began his career with Pioneer Mutual Life Insurance Company, where after 25 years, he retired as the regional director in 2001. Jim was a member of the Eagle’s Club, Moorhead American Legion, and Nativity Catholic Church. He enjoyed autoracing and listening to any sports broadcast available. He took every opportunity he could to travel. Jim especially loved golfing, and thanks to his close friends, he was able to still play in his final years. Jim loved watching his grandkids’ activities and sharing his unsolicited sports knowledge. Jim had a passion for people and loved making new friends up to the very end. He will be greatly missed by family and friends who he just wanted to make smile. He is survived by his wife, Ginny; two children, Becky Dwyer (Clint Hayford) of Moorhead, MN, Shelly (Steve) Bopp of Stirum, ND; and his two cherished grandchildren, Josie and Calvin; sisters, Deanna (Gary) Intermill of Glen Cove, WA, Deb (Mark) Protexter of Sioux City, IA, Bonnie Jasman of Sioux City, IA; in-laws, Jim (Lois) McPherson of Wichita, KS, Doug (Leona) McPherson of Valley City, ND, Jerry (Pam) McPherson of Yuma, CO, Carl (Vicki) McPherson of Wahpeton, ND, Eddie (Laurel) of Erie, ND, Donnie McPherson (Joanie) of Arthur, ND, Linda (Larry) Ottesen of West Fargo, ND, Toby (Sue) McPherson of Page, ND, Scott McPherson of Erie, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews he loved. He is preceded in death by his two children, John and Rosie; mother, Helen Dwyer; father, Sylvester Dwyer; step-mother, Mary Dwyer; grandparents Mary and Jack Dwyer (who raised him); parents-in-law, Mary and Gordon McPherson; sisters, Jackie (Chuck) Simonson and Barb (Larry) Horsley. There will be a visitation from 5-7:00 PM with a prayer service following at 7:00 PM on Friday, August 23, 2019 at Nativity Catholic Church, Fargo. The memorial Mass will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Nativity Catholic Church with a visitation one hour prior. Memorials preferred to Hospice of the Red River Valley or Fraser Ltd.

  1. I am very sorry for the loss of my friend, Jim Dwyer. I had the distinct honor and privilege to share in his golfing adventures for the last 15 or 20 years. Even when he couldn’t see the ball anymore, he could still drive it nearly 200 yards straight down the middle of the fairway! I miss you Jim and thank you for your friendship!

  2. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Such wonderful memories of Jim driving Mom, Jeanne, Lori, Linda and me around DC looking at the sights. I was in grade school and we flew to MD to see my brother, Bob. Linda came with us and we stayed with Jim & Virginia. Such a great time!

    When I think of the times we were all able to visit, either in N.D. or Montana, I cherish the many shared stories & laughter.   19. Sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. He was a wonderful man. He called me on my birthday every year we were at Pioneer Mutual. He never missed one and left a voice mail if I was out. Cherish those wonderful memories we all have of JD.

  20. Just learned of Jim’s passing, Virginia. My memories are many, first and foremost his twinkling smile. I admired the way he endured his vision issues with grace and courage. My daughter Jane will never forget his generosity when helping her get her first car. A sweet man, whose life will be remembered always with fondness.
