James “Jim” Frank, 77, Fargo, ND, passed away on October 5, 2023, at home surrounded by his loving family.

Born on June 11, 1946 to Raymond and Marguerite (Schafer) Frank, Jim grew up in a close-knit community, where he cultivated lasting friendships and a strong work ethic. After graduating from Bishop Ryan High School in 1964, he answered his patriotic calling and joined the Army in September 1965. Serving as a Vietnam War veteran, James exemplified courage and dedication throughout his military tenure.

On June 27, 1970, Jim exchanged vows with the love of his life, Tamara Thompson, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Donnybrook, ND. Together, they built a remarkable bond, raising a beautiful family and sharing countless cherished memories throughout their journey.

Jim attended Minot State College and graduated in 1972. Following his passion for helping others, he devoted 35 years of his professional life to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs in Fargo. His unwavering commitment to veterans’ well-being earned him admiration from colleagues and heartfelt gratitude from those he served.

Outside of his career, Jim cherished the simple joys of life. In his leisure time, he could often be found lost in a good book, challenging himself with crossword puzzles, or casting his fishing line into tranquil waters at Toad Lake, Minnesota. However, his greatest happiness came from being surrounded by loved ones. Jim was a dedicated family man, always eager to create lasting memories and celebrate milestones alongside his children, grandchildren, and dear friends.

Jim entered a well-deserved retirement in 2005, embracing the opportunity to indulge in his passions and enjoy precious moments with loved ones. Jim was an active member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and the Knights of Columbus, embodying the principles of service and brotherhood. His involvement in these organizations allowed him to forge deeper connections within the community and contribute positively to the lives of many.

Jim leaves behind his loving wife of 53 years, Tammy; his children, Jim Jr. (Petra), Brian (Sammi), and Megan (Jake); his grandchildren, Steven, Brooklyn, Juliette, Ellie, Jerome, TJ, Isabel, Jodesse, and Jordan; his brother, Paul (Andrea); as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Marguerite, and his sister, Mary (Tom).

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I’m so sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. Having known and worked with Jim for over 30 years at the Fargo VAMC, I can honestly say that he was one of the most knowledgeable and caring individuals I had the honor to have known.
God’s peace and comfort to his loving family.

  2. A long time ago, I had a work-study job at the Fargo VA Center. Jim was one of the Adjudicators that I worked under. He showed me the ropes within the department, but he became a friend. Always engaging and so fun to be around. Rest in peace, Jim!

  3. Sorry to hear about Jim’s death. I have so many memories of him coming to the farm when we all were about the same age. May his soul rest in peace.

  4. Thinking of you Tammy and families, on the passing of Jim. Many prayers and hugs are sent to you! 🤗🤗🤗

    P. S. (Delora shared this news with me)

  5. My name is Mike O’Leary, I was a “downtown” KC member with Jim for years, we also bartenders there for dart tournaments / weddings and other events. Jim was also a great friend, very compassionate person and became everyone’s friend instantly. Enjoy your well deserved rest my friend !!! Mike

  6. To Jim’s Family,
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this difficult time. I worked with Jim for many years at the Fargo VA and Regional Office Center. His dedication and commitment to veterans was evident each and every day. RIP, Jim.

  7. Jim was a very caring and trustworthy man. I relied on his counsel and experience when I was the Director of the Fargo VA. and Jim could always be counted on to do what was best for the veterans that we served. He was a terrific colleague with a great sense of humor and a positive outlook on life. (He also made the best deer jerky that he would share at the VSO conferences.) Thanks for your service Jim.

  8. As an aide to U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan, I worked with Jim Frank for two decades assisting veterans. Gee, he was wonderful! Always so helpful, patient, caring. Such an eminently decent man. Adios, Jim.

  9. Jim was an absolute gem: smart, funny, humble, dedicated and so much more. I was a senate staffer and was assigned veteran issues. I was clueless. Jim was the teacher and mentor. He made me look good. After 15 years I think he made a pretty good veteran’s advocate out of me. Whenever I needed his help on behalf of a veteran he was there. The phrase One in a Million fits him perfectly.
