James (Jim) Murray Steichen, 81, of Fargo, North Dakota, passed away on Monday, January 5, 2026, at Sanford Health in Fargo.
Jim was born on June 28, 1944, in Helena, Montana, and grew up in Fargo, where he spent most of his life. He lived for a time in California before eventually returning home to North Dakota. In 1988, Jim married Nancy Brooks, and together they built a life with their daughter and made a home in Fargo.
Jim was a true handyman at heart. He could most often be found in his garage, working on projects, fixing things, or finding creative solutions to whatever needed attention. He dedicated 30 years of hard work to Western Products, retiring at the age of 70.
Known for his sharp wit and quick humor, Jim was a jokester who always had a smart comment or clever response ready. His sense of humor and easygoing nature left a lasting impression.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Caroll and Bernice (Joyce) Steichen; his brothers, Jeff Steichen and Jerry Steichen; and his sisters, Carol Skarie and Bonnita Magee.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Steichen; his daughter, Tiffany (Ricky) Marquart; his grandchildren, Taylor (Hayden), Kaden, and Kendra; his greatgrandchild, Malcolm; his sisters, Connie Perez and Gloria Patocka, many nieces, nephews, and friends (especially those at Specks).
In accordance with Jim’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. Instead, family and friends are invited to honor his memory by raising a Bud Light or vodka concoction like a screwdriver and sharing a laugh—just the way Jim would have wanted.

Nancy and Tiffany I’m so sorry to hear about Jim’s passing, he’ll be greatly missed. We had many years of fun at the lake and at home.
My deepest condolences to the entire family.
Love, Arnie Lauinger and Family
