James V. Hebert

James V. Hebert was born September 20, 1935 in Fargo, ND to Leon and Rose (Fugere) Hebert, the second son in a family of eight children. (He is survived by Louise Lingen of Perham, MN and predeceased by Genevieve Durben, Marie Haugen, Eileen Cossette, Willard Hebert, Carol Hebert, and Shirley England.)

While still in high school, James was accepted into the United States Marine Corps and served until 1957 when he was released from active duty as a mortar man and transferred to the Marine Corps Reserve in Las Vegas, NV. He was honorable discharged in March 1962. While serving his country, James completed high school, attained the rank of corporal and received the National Defense Service Medal.

After military service, James made his home in Long Beach, CA, working for the US Postal Service in a 26-year career and retiring in 2002. Jimmy typically had a side hustle in play – such as working for the Los Angeles Rams football team, betting at the races or discovering a myriad of treasures and trinkets at garage sales. After retiring, James returned to live in Fargo. With religious devotion a consistent thread in his later life, Jimmy attended mass and services around the city.

If you knew James, invariably you saw him with a newspaper in his pocket. He was a whiz with crossword puzzles and loved words. The art of song, poetry and elaborate story telling were Jimmy’s regular companions. All who knew him will recall his embellished holiday messages and greetings.

James was generous in his unique way, always carrying silver coins or two-dollar bills to give or an offering from his eclectic garage sale collection. James’ checkbook was filled with entries of the many charities he supported, including and especially organizations of ministry and the Catholic Church.

James passed peacefully at St. Catherine’s in Fargo on July 25, 2026.
