Jane Ann (Schlossman) Hella, a devoted educator, advocate, and beloved family member, passed away on February 18, 2025, at the age of 77. Born in Fargo, North Dakota, on January 15, 1948, Jane was the second of five children to William Schlossman Sr. and Anna Jane Schlossman.
Jane graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1966 and went on to attend Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. She later transferred to the University of Minnesota, where she completed her degree in 1971. Continuing her education, she earned her master’s degree from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 1989.
Jane had fond memories of summers on Pelican Lake with family and friends, soaking up the sun, enjoying the water, and building lasting relationships that remained close to her heart. She married her high school sweetheart, Bruce Hella, in 1969, beginning their life together in St. Paul, Minnesota. After spending several years in the Twin Cities, they returned to Fargo, where they raised their three children, Brent, Tari, and Bryce.
It was in Fargo where Jane’s career and passion for early childhood education flourished. She began as a preschool special education teacher, driven by a deep belief in the potential of every child. She dedicated over 30 years to Fargo Public Schools, where her commitment to children and families led her to a leadership role as a coordinator in her later years. Known for her unwavering support of students, families, and colleagues, Jane always made time to listen, advocate, and foster a community of care and inclusion.
In her retirement, Jane embraced a new chapter, spending winters in Sarasota, Florida. There, she built cherished friendships, hosted her grandkids, enjoyed golfing, and found joy in the vibrant community of retirees. Whether on the golf course, at the theater or in a casual gathering, she radiated warmth, humor—especially her love for puns—and a genuine interest in the people around her.
Jane is survived by her three children, Brent Hella (Michelle Radke-Hella) of Fargo, Tari Hella-Yelk (Sam Yelk) of St. Paul, Bryce Hella (William Garcia) of Ann Arbor, Michigan and her grandchildren Sydney Hella, William Hella, Oliver Yelk, Alexander Hella, Mayson Yelk, Henry Garcia and Ellie Garcia. She was a beloved sister to Marjorie Schlossman (Ivan Weir), William Schlossman Jr. (Mary), Brad Schlossman (Carol), and Jeff Schlossman (Karen). She is survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and their families. She was preceded in death by her father, William Schlossman Sr., and mother, Anna Jane (Black) Schlossman.
Jane leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and advocacy. Her dedication to children, kindness toward others, and ability to bring people together will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by those whose lives she touched.
A celebration of Jane’s life will take place at the Plains Art Museum on Saturday, March 1, from 5:30 to 9:00 PM, with a tribute service beginning at 6:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the YWCA of Cass Clay, Gigi’s Playhouse of Fargo, and the Fargo Plains Art Museum.

Charities
The family greatly appreciates donations made to these charities in Jane Ann (Schlossman) Hella 's name.
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your sister Jane. May the light of her candle continue to shine. Peace and comfort be upon you all.
Your mother was GREAT person. She was my mentor as well as my friend as I taught in Fargo. Jane was an advocate for the Early Childhood Special Education Program, it’s staff, and it’s students as a teacher and coordinator.
She will be greatly missed by many as she has touched many lives.
I will keep you all in my prayers.
God Bless!
Tom Hannasch
Warmest regards,

When I was a child, I was delayed in my speech to a degree that necessitated speech therapy. Jane played a crucial role in assisting my parents and facilitating my admission into a speech therapy program at El Zagal. I fondly remember going through speech therapy and helping develop my capabilities as a speaker. My family cannot thank Jane enough for that assistance – I cannot fathom what it would be like without having that therapy.
A dearly loved friend from log ago.
She will surely be missed.
We have so many fond memories of Janie. Our condolences to all of her family😘 Glenn and Carolyn Renfandt
Sending our love hugs and prayers to all of you during this difficult time. Jane was definitely one of a kind!
I had the privilege of doing Jane’s hair for several years during my career at OLIVIERI’S Salon in Fargo . She was one of my all-time favorite clients to sit in my chair. She was always so much fun.
Bryce, as your classmate at Fargo South, I understand your loss and hope your cherished memories offer you peace.
Sincerely,
Elaine Olivieri
I worked in Jane’s classroom for several years and learned from her every single day. When her students would walk in the classroom in the morning she would be there waiting, would take their faces in her hands, look directly at each of them and say “I am SO glad you are here today!” Those students always knew they were loved. I will never forget that lesson! Jane was such a gift to early childhood and to all of us who were her coworkers and friends. She is missed.
Jane was a wonderful lady who was like-minded with my wife, Kathy. They put the love and care of children and women issues at the top of their list.
Jane was an active member of this community and an important part of the FPS. Her whole family has been a strong part of Fargo for many years. Passed on, but not away.
Dear Schlossman and Hella families:
When I look at Jane’s lovely photo, I see “All things wise and wonderful; all things bright and beautiful”. I was so fortunate to work with Jane for her 33 years in our school district: observing first hand the brilliance and joy which she brought to each child and family whom she served. The memory of her welcoming smile and laughter still warms my inner core. My sympathies are with each of you. Much love and hugs, Michele Vannote
Brad, Carol, and families of Jane, you are all in our thoughts and prayers at this sad time. May your memories of Jane bring you lasting peace and comfort.
I was lucky to meet Jane when she joined my PEO Chapter. She always lit up the room as she had a friendly smile and a fun story to share. She was just the best! I’m heartbroken to read of her death and I send my sincere sympathy to her entire family. Rest in peace, Jane.
Although I know and have great respect for several of Jane’s children, I did not know her personally. But she obviously had a huge influence on her children, giving them the freedom to pursue their dreams in whatever field they chose. What a remarkable woman. She has left life too soon.. but has left beautiful memories for her children and grands. Rest in Peace, Jane.
To Janie’s family
I’m so sorry that I can’t be there today to celebrate Janie. What I loved most about Janie was her self-deprecating sense of humor. I so admired her dedication and generosity in support of young children. She was always saying that she wished she could do more. I will miss her.
Rest in peace Jane.
