Janice M. Dobervich
September 7, 1950 ~ October 3, 2024
Janice Marie Dobervich, age 74, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 3rd, 2024, at her home in Fargo, ND, surrounded by her loving family.
Janice was born on September 7th, 1950, in Langdon, ND, to Edwin and Edna Rose. After graduating from the University of North Dakota with a degree in Library Science, Janice dedicated over 40 years to her career as a librarian in Casselton, ND, where she inspired countless students and community members with her passion for reading. It was at Central Cass School that she met her husband of 50 years, Sam Dobervich. They were married on June 29th, 1974, and began their life in Casselton before settling in Fargo, where they raised their three children: Eric, Sara, and Jenna.
Janice’s kindness and gentle spirit touched everyone who knew her. She led by example, showing those around her the importance of respect and compassion. A lifelong lover of books, she passed that love down to her children and granddaughter. She kept a meticulous notebook of every book she read, a collection so extensive it could fill an entire bookshelf. In addition to her love of reading, Janice was passionate about dolls and was an active member of the Red River Valley Doll Club, where she formed lasting friendships. She was also known for her baking, especially her beloved chicken dinner bars, a family favorite.
Janice will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Sam Dobervich; her children: Eric (Gretchen) Dobervich, Sara (Shane) Hoeft, and Jenna Larsen and Chris Sanders and his son, Jack Sanders; her granddaughter, Lauren Larsen; her sister, Peggy; and her brothers: Bob, Jim, Mike, and Fred. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Edna Rose.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Janice’s memory to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to further pancreatic cancer research, or to Friends of the Fargo Library at PO Box 1365, Fargo, ND 58107, in honor of Janice’s lifelong commitment to literacy and her enduring love of a good book.

Eric, Gretchen and family:
We are so sorry for your loss. Wish we could stop hearts from hurting and only feel the love of her
I enjoyed working with Jan at Central Cass where she was a dedicated librarian who appreciated quality literature and encouraged students to read often and widely. We joined each other for lunch at school and a couple times a year for several years after retirement. She talked of her family with great love. My condolences to her family.
My thoughts and prayers for Sam , Eric, Sara, Jenna and your families. Also to the Rose families.
Janice was always smiling ,she will be missed by all.
Many fond memories of working with Jan at Central Cass, sharing lunch and a love of a good book. My sympathy to the entire family.
Hugs and prayers to all.
My condolences to the Dobervich family. Jan was a wonderful and caring person. I enjoyed many school lunches with her at Central Cass for countless years. She will be greatly missed.
It was heartbreaking to hear about my cousin’s cancer and then death. I am glad she isn’t in pain anymore. I was born a week before her, and was named Janet. Because of me she got named Janice instead. I am glad we both ended up going by Jan. I am sorry that I am unable to attend her service. A donation has been made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in her name. A photo of Janice, Peggy, Fred, and me holding the kittens, has been on display in my home for many years. It is one of my favorite photos. I loved visiting the farm and heading to the barn to go find kittens.
Eric, It was nice to read about your mom and her love of reading and dedication to her family and students. I am sorry for your loss and hope that you are finding peace with your family. Blessings, Kate
A candle for your mom 🙂
My sincere sympathy to Jan’s family. I had the pleasure of working as her assistant in the library at Central Cass several years ago. Your family has many wonderful memories to treasure.
Blessings to all. Carol Radermacher
My sincere sympathies to the family of Mrs. Dobervich. I was fortunate enough to have a unique experience as worked with her, as a student. I was the first, and only, JET (Junior Educator of Tomorrow) during my final year of high school to shadow her duties. Arriving at college, I initially took classes in Library Sciences and work in the college library my entire college years. She was a sweet, professional and shared her love of books and learning. I will forever be grateful for her impact on my life. May you hold your memories close during this difficult time.
Jan & I shared many rides to and from Central Cass. I don’t think I ever saw her in a bad mood. She was a sweetheart!
I am still talking about books that Mrs Dobervich recommended to me. She was such an inspiration. I wish I knew I was allowed to talk to adults when I was young, how much more I could have learned from her! She was amazing.
