Jean M. Carlson

Jean Marilyn Carlson, 93, of Fargo, ND, formerly of Leonard, ND, passed away on August 20, 2026, at HIA Heather’s House under the care of HIA Hospice. She was born on June 16, 1933, in Pickert, ND, to Swen and Annie (Sund) Grotte.

Jean married Verle Burdick on June 16, 1952, in Moorhead, MN. Following their marriage, they moved to a farm near Leonard, ND, where she continued to live most of her life. They had three children, Elaine, Eldon and Elona. Throughout her life, Jean was a devoted homemaker, dedicating herself to creating a loving home for her family. She found great joy in the simple things in life, especially gardening and music. Jean took great pride in her flower beds and looked forward to tending her large vegetable garden each summer and sharing the fruit of her labor. Jean lived her life in quiet faith and had a deep love for the Lord. Verle died on July 21, 1988. On September 21, 1991, she married Beryl Carlson in Moorhead, MN. They lived in Scottsbluff, NE for a short time before moving back to the farm near Leonard. Beryl died on December 26, 2018. In 2019, she moved to Fargo, ND and remained there until her passing.

She is survived by her children Elaine (Alvin) Myers of Ryder, ND, Eldon (Jennifer) Burdick of Kindred, ND and Elona (Bruce) Overby of Binford, ND; grandchildren Mitch (Amy) Burdick of West Fargo, ND, Ty (Janelle) Burdick of Leonard, ND, Tasha Overby, Tanner (Megan) Overby and Trey Overby all of Binford, ND; great-grandchildren Ethan, Hannah, Savannah, Kennedy and Julianna Myers, James, Hilde and Hattie Burdick and Ensley and Ciena Burdick; siblings Jon (Helen) Grotte, Walter (Donna) Grotte and Fern (Tom) Hansen; many nieces and nephews; stepchildren Larry (Larene) Carlson, Craig (April) Carlson, Arvey (Jane) Carlson, Curtis Carlson, Cheryl (Paul) Woods and Carolyn (Jim) Henderson; and many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands Verle Burdick and Beryl Carlson; sister Edna Burchill; brothers Stanley Grotte, Jennings Grotte, Marvin Grotte and Ernest Grotte; grandsons Bradley Myers and Craig Myers and step-granddaughter Shelli Woods.

Jean’s family would like to extend their gratitude to HIA Hospice, especially nurse Lexy, for the compassionate care and support given to Jean and her family.

Memorials are preferred to HIA Hospice.
