Jeff lost his 30-year battle with MS on Sunday, April 2, 2023, at Eventide in Fargo, surrounded by his family, at the age of 69.

Jeffrey Otis McClean was born on April 10, 1953, the son of Otis and Florence (Baker) McClean, in Jamestown, ND. He grew up on the family farm in Ypsilanti and graduated from Jamestown High School.

Jeff was united in marriage with Elizabeth “Beth” Lyons on August 25, 1973, in Jamestown, ND. They made their home in Jamestown, where he worked as a machinist for Haybuster Manufacturing and was an active member of The Fraternal Order of Eagles. After moving to Fargo in 1987, he worked for Case IH and filled his time and garage with woodworking projects. He never found a household item that couldn’t be improved with a few tweaks of his own (even if he just painted it his favorite color, John Deere Green), another yard looking as well-cared for as his, or neighborhood snow he wouldn’t clean. He always grew too many tomatoes each summer and had sunflower seeds within arm’s reach. Over the years, he also enjoyed hunting, cars, and collecting toy tractors, but saved his biggest smiles for his introductions with each grandchild.

Jeff is survived by his wife Beth of Fargo; his two children – Michelle (Frank) Taracido of Denver, CO; and Bryan (Nicole) McClean of Argusville, ND; his seven grandchildren – Madisyn, Kaylie, Paisley, and Piper McClean, and William, Matthew, and Charlotte Taracido. Also surviving is his mother, Florence McClean; and his siblings – Julie (Loren) Hoeckle, Jon (Jody) McClean, Jason (Penny) McClean, Joel (Della) McClean and Jerome (Deb) McClean, brother-in-law, Michael (Brenda) Lyons of Centennial, CO; many other very dear relatives including several nieces and nephews.

Jeff was preceded in death by his father, Otis; his mother-in-law, Muriel Lyons; and his sister-in-law, Kathy Strand.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Beth and family I’m so sorry for your loss. I’ll never forget watching Jeff working in the yard even when he was having a hard time getting around he was so determined to get everything done. Any man that loved his dogs the way he did just goes to show he was a good man.🌻

  2. What a legacy of love Jeff and Beth created. The most profound example of dedication and faithfulness. May God give you all peace and May His grace surround and comfort you.

  3. Beth, Michelle, Bryan and family, I am so sorry for your loss. I have known Jeff almost as long as I have known Beth and feel like I have lost a good friend. I loved coming over and looking over a new wood working project or something that he made to make life easier (leaf bagger – I still use mine) or the moveable tomato cages so that he could move them with the sun. He was funny, creative, kind and just a great guy to be around- he will be missed!

  4. I have a few family members that are living with MS and some have passed on
Bless all of your love ones and shall keep all in my prayers Peace and Love

  5. Beth and family and Aunt Florence, my deepest sympathy to you all. I knew jeff as a 2nd cousin. Seeing them all (bothers) when they came to Uncle (my grandfather) George’s farm during the summers. My memories of him are great ones. My thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of sorrow. May God help ease the pain and comfort you. He will be missed by all. The memories he has given each one of us will mean he will forever be a part of our lives. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

  6. Beth and family, Steve and I are so sorry to hear about Jeff’s passing! He gave a heck of a fight! He was such a nice guy, so kind, caring and fun to be around! We have many fun memories of him and you! There is so much love surrounding you and your family, and of course Jeff! May love and beautiful memories carry you through!

  7. Dear Auntie Beth, Bryan and Michelle and all the family,
All of you are in our prayers as the world mourns Jeff. He was a lovely kind man and I have so many fond memories of visits with him. He had a wonderful smile and a brilliant sense of humour. Often cracking a one liner which you couldn’t help but smile at. Take care of yourselves during this very difficult time. He would have wanted that.
Love, Kim, Mark, Madeleine and Dexter Percy

  8. Julie, we are so sorry to hear of the loss of your brother. Our deepest sympathy to you and your family.
    Marvin and Barb Cowley

  10. Beth and family,
I wish I could be there to celebrate the life of Jeff, please know you’re in my prayers in the days and weeks ahead. I always enjoyed visiting with Jeff when I’d stop by. He’d show me what he was working on in the garage, so talented in so many ways! Jeff and Beth’s love story is my favorite. Young love turned lasting love for so many years, through sickness and health, good times and bad. Sending my love 💋JoAnn

  11. Deat Beth and Family,
Lee and I were taken by surprise at the news of Jeff’s passing. We are so sorry for your loss and you have our deepest sympathy. We can remember having good times with you both at your home and Norwest Christmas parties.
May our Lord wrap his loving arms around you and your family and give you peace and comfort during this difficult time. Sending hugs and prayers to you all.
