Born in: Devils Lake, North Dakota
Resided in: Fargo, North Dakota

Jerry Walter Crane of Fargo, North Dakota (75) passed away peacefully at the Fargo VA Hospital on Wednesday, June 12, 2024 after a long and courageous battle with myelodysplastic syndrome due to high Agent Orange exposure in Vietnam. Jerry was born October 28, 1948 in Devils Lake, North Dakota to Walter “Red” Crane and Livonia (Schindele) Crane. A graduate of Devils Lake High School, Class of 1966, Jerry attended Lake Region State College to obtain a degree in Automotive Technology in 1968. Later that year, Jerry enlisted in the Navy. He was assigned to the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 58 Quarry Company (“Seabees”), serving bravely in the Vietnam War from 1968-1969. He was stationed in Chu Lai as a minesweeping/special security unit as well as a heavy equipment operator within the Seabees before being honorably discharged from service in August 1970 as an E-02.

Upon his return stateside, he was stationed in Davisville, Rhode Island until his unit was decommissioned, moving to the Great Lakes Naval Base in Chicago for one year, all the while regularly making the long drive in his ’70 Dodge Challenger to see his future bride Monica Mardell Halvorson. The couple married in June 1971 and would have celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on June 19th. He referred to her regularly as ‘his bride’ until his passing.

Jerry always worked tirelessly. In the 1960s, he did custom combining at Lakota and in the Southern U.S., worked at Firestone Tire Retreading, did construction with Barry Smith Construction Bureau of Reclamation, and janitorial, delivery and handyman work with the Fargo Public School System- all before starting with the Fargo Fire Department in 1973. He served the city of Fargo for 31 years, starting as a firefighter and later was promoted to the Fire Prevention Bureau in 1987 before retiring in 2004. Throughout his time with the City of Fargo, he accumulated many hours of specialized courses around the country until the same schools requested that he return as an instructor. He regularly testified in court as a state witness and expert witness. He retired from service to the city in 2004. Never one to be idle, Jerry worked as a private fire investigator for Crawford, then as a truck driver for Pepsi Co., and then drove cabs and limousines for Lucky 7 Cabs. In 2007, he was asked to take on the role of North Dakota deputy state fire marshal and once again served the state until he had to medically retire in 2019 at the age of 70.

Jerry was first and foremost a family man. He and Monica had four children: Dion Drew, Jared Jess, Mindy Mardell, and Thea Terese. His children, and later his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, brought him immense joy and pride. Jerry was also an avid hunter, enjoying the time spent with his family members and friends beside him as much or more than the hunt itself. In his later years, Jerry reconnected with his Seabee brothers, attending many Seabee reunions across the nation. He looked forward to these reunions each year with great anticipation.

Jerry was a fighter- first in country, then against flames, and finally battling MDS for 10 years. He went through many rounds of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, a full bone marrow transplant followed by 100 days of quarantine in the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System while his body rebuilt an immune system from scratch, and regular trips back to Nashville for testing. He was declared to be in remission, celebrating 3 “rebirthdays” before going back into treatment. He did at least 10 more rounds of chemotherapy with intermittent hospital stays for various health complications before ultimately succumbing to the disease.

Jerry is survived by his wife Monica (Halvorson) Crane (Fargo, ND); his four children Dion Crane (Shauna) of Mandan, ND, Jared Crane (Christa) of Fargo, ND, Mindy Rodke (John Lockwood) of Hawley, MN, and Thea Leak (Russell) of New Orleans, LA; his nine grandchildren Jada and Drew Crane, Andrew, Gavin, Kade, and Brielle Rodke, Stephanie (Billy) Jordan, Katie Gibb (David), and Rhiannon Leak; great-gandchildren Spencer and Grace Jordan; his sisters Jean Jurgens (Jim) and Jane Gage (Roger); sister-in-law Cynthia Crane; dozens of nieces, nephews, and cousins; and accumulated so many friends and adopted “kids” over the years. Jerry was preceded in death and welcomed Home by his father Walter “Red” Crane, mother Livonia Crane, sister Joanne File, twin brother James (Jim) Crane, father-in-law Howard Halvorson, mother-in-law Gertrude Halvorson, sister-in-law Kristine (Kris) Halvorson, and son-in-law Paul Rodke.

A vigil will be held on Sunday, June 23rd at 5pm at Boulger Funeral Home. Visitation begins at 3pm with a rosary at 4:30pm. A funeral mass with Father Luke Meyer presiding will be held on Monday, June 24th at 10am at Sts. Anne and Joachim Catholic Church. Visitation begins at 9am. Jerry will be buried with military honors following the funeral services at Fargo National Cemetery.

Jerry’s family would like to thank the staff at the Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center, Fargo VA Hospital, and Tennessee Valley Healthcare System, along with many family members and friends for their care and support throughout this long journey.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I had the pleasure of having an office across the hall from Jerry for three years. He was always fun to talk with or have a glass of coffee with. If you had a glass of coffee with Jerry, you were always guaranteed two things… You would hear his opinion, and he would be spinning the basketball on the handle of his Duke coffee mug with his thumb. I think my funniest memories were once I found out the type of things that got Jerry fired up…Democrats, stupid people, and the Spanish Consulate (Thea needed to go there in Washington DC, they said they were open, then closed for a Spanish holiday). What Jerry enjoyed talking about the most, was his wife and children, it was very to easy to see that his world revolved around them. You will be missed.

  2. Monica and family,

So sorry to hear about Jerry. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Take Care.🙏🙏

    Rick and Faye Majerus

  3. I am sorry for the passing of Jerry🙏 I have so much respect for Jerry! I worked with him on many a fire investigation throughout the years. I could call Jerry any time any day and he would answer his phone! I would meet him at fire school and always have a great conversation! Thanks Jerry, I respect you so much!!

  4. Jerry has left the best memories to those of us who were lucky enough to share with him. A hugh to heaven. ✨🤍🙏🏼

    • He enjoyed you, Danisa & would always be happy to hear updates I had on what you were up to! Thanks friend!

  5. To the Crane family,
Jerry will be missed. I had the honor of working in the same office with Jerry for many years. Although we worked for different entities, Jerry was definitely part of the team! We miss Jerry around the office and will miss him dropping in from time to time! We will miss Jerry talking about “my Bride”, Jerry talking about his kids and grand kids, and Jerry just being Jerry. We are so sorry for your loss, but so grateful to have known Jerry! The Crane family is in our thoughts and prayers.

  6. Monica and family,
Jerry was our neighbor for around 30 years and a fellow Veteran. We had good visits from time to time and he always spoke well of his family and his job with the fire department. I thank you family members for Jerry’s proud service to our Country as a Veteran.

  7. Condolences to the Crane family on Jerry’s passing. I enjoyed working with Jerry for the better part of a decade. Coffee twice a day with Jerry was mandatory, and there was no excuse that was going to get you out of it. We will miss Jerry stopping by the office and we will miss his wisdom and advice. RIP Jerry, you will be missed!

  8. Jerry Crane Family

Jerry and I met during fire investigations several times when I was Police Chief in Lisbon, ND. I learned a lot from him during those times. His conversations were always enlightening whether professionally or talking about his family.

Thank you for your service and dedication Jerry. You will be missed. 🇺🇸🙏🇺🇸

    Your friend,

    Jeanette Persons
    Lisbon Police Chief, Retired

  9. Monica and Jerry have been our neighbors for many years. We have shared happy times and were there for each other through some difficult times as well. We will miss Jerry and were happy to have been able to call him our friend.

  10. So deeply saddened to read of Jerry’s passing. Can remember when the Crane family moved to Devils Lake. Was a big deal to have two sets of twins in the family. So many memories of our times at the swimming pool, playing baseball on the vacant lot and his Mom’s peanut butter cookies. Monica and family my heartfelt condolences. Rest in Peace Jerry.

  11. Dear Monica,
Losing the one you love is hard, but what a privilege to love and be loved! May God’s comfort be yours as you keep an eternal perspective.

  12. My sympathies to Jerry Cranes family. I met him first at parent teacher conferences when he and his wife visited my classroom. Three of their four children were my former students. He was a good dad and a friendly Stonebridge neighbor.

  13. My heart goes out to you all at this time. The times I had spent with Jerry and Monica in Bismarck are memorable. You can tell he meant so much to many people. The love he had for his family, friends, profession showed. Lucky to have known him. Sorry we were unable to be there but my thoughts are with you all. Hugs. Barb and boys

  14. I had the distinct honor of working several fire investigations with Jerry. Like anyone who worked with him can testify to, Jerry forgot more about fire in 5 minutes, than most will learn in a lifetime. I feel very fortunate to have been able to work with Jerry and missed his presence in the fire investigation field the moment he retired. I like many, will remember him fondly.
