JoAnn Marie Hennum of Fargo, ND (formerly of Donaldson, MN), passed into the loving arms of our Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 9, 2026. Those who knew JoAnn will forever remember her quick wit, her jokes, and the one liners that could brighten any room.
JoAnn was born on June 17, 1939, to Melvin and Thelma (Larson) Nelson in Crookston, MN. She graduated from Crookston Central High School in 1957 and began her career working at the courthouse in Crookston.
One evening after work, a young man selling cookware knocked on her door and asked her out. That gentleman, Merle Hennum, would soon become the love of her life. They were united in marriage on February 17, 1962, and shared the next 38 years building a life, a family, and countless memories together.
JoAnn and Merle made their home on the Hennum farmstead in Donaldson, MN. Early on, JoAnn’s first attempt at baking bread turned into what she fondly described as “soup,” but she quickly perfected her recipes and became an exceptional baker of breads and bars. Life on the farm was busy, and she spent many seasons preparing meals, delivering them to the fields, and shuttling equipment from one place to another. Despite calling herself a “klutz,” she managed only two emergency room visits over decades of working around large machinery.
She handled the billing and administrative work for Northwest Steel and logged countless miles—often with kids in tow—tracking down the right motor or sprocket for the job. JoAnn also generously served her community through the American Cancer Society, the Kittson County Historical Society, and the St. Olaf Lutheran Church Auxiliary.
In the winter of 1991, JoAnn and Merle tried their hand at becoming snowbirds, spending a few weeks in South Texas. After exploring several destinations, they settled on Lake Havasu City, AZ in 1996, where JoAnn continued to winter until her health prevented her from returning in 2025.
In 2000, JoAnn moved from the farm to Fargo, ND, where she enjoyed being closer to family. She treasured sleepovers with her grandchildren, attending their school and sporting events, and the occasional day trip to the casino to “support the local economy of the small town.”
JoAnn is survived by her children, Jeff (Margaret) Hennum and Todd (Stacy) Hennum; brothers, Gerald (Carolyn) Nelson, Jerome (Kathy) Nelson, and Richard Nelson; and grandchildren, Claire Hennum, Amelia Hennum, Anna Hennum, Sadie Wark, Sienna Wark, and Brevin Wark.
She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Merle; her brother, Allen Nelson; and her grandson, Cody Hennum.

and always had a smile on her face. I would always mail her the Kennedy Crew
Birthday and Activity calendar every year. The last time I got to visit with her
was at the Airport. I was going to Vegas and she was going to AZ. I will miss
her very much!!! REST IN PEACE MY FRIEND.
Dear Family-
I loved Joann. She knew nearly all of my family from Stephen and Donaldson. She was the best challenge to my dad’s and my inherited sense of humor. She ended up attending my church and often people thought we were enemies the way we bantered. Quite the opposite. Im extremely sad to hear she has passed as I’m away until March. Please know how she will be missed and I look forward to connecting with her again. Right now her and my parents are playing cards or causing some kind of ruckus. Blessed be her memory.💞🙏

I ran into Joanne some years ago when she was shopping for furniture where I worked. We got to visiting and discovered
that she baby sat me when we both lived in Crookston. She was only 10 years older than me, but remembered me and
my parents! We had a nice visit and traded phone numbers..intending to meet for coffee, which sadly, never happened.
Rest in peace, Joanne.
I sure enjoyed her in church always in a jokester mode she was a loving soul . She took the grief class so got to know her better in the small setting. She is a living Angel now n may she is Rip
We spent lots of winters at our condo complex with Joanne—she being grateful to be out of ND— and us from a cold SD! She kept us smiling—even when she flatly refused to eat our oyster stew on Christmas Eve (we altered our menu eventually)! Such great memories of Joanne and some special times together here in LHC….and visiting in Fargo!
Rest in peace, Joanne.
Your SD friends,
Michael & Nola
Dear Jeff and Margaret; Todd and Stacy; and all family: How very sorry we are to learn of Joann’s passing. She was SUCH a dear and special lady! She was a delightful addition to the Hennum Family! We have LOTS of treasured memories of times spent with her and Merle. So many laughs and fun times!!!! I particularly enjoyed being with her for many American Cancer Society events in Kittson County and beyond. She was a dedicated and valued volunteer for many years. What a special gift Joann was to the world! Thank you God, for dear Joann! She will be missed, but never forgotten. May God comfort each one of you in very special ways: through friends, family, and treasured memories. With our deepest sympathy, love, prayers, and hugs, Charles and Patti Swanson (we will be with you at her funeral if weather permits)
JoAnn has been our backyard neighbor for 20+ years. We would chat about the weather and my flowers, me from my deck and JoAnn in her front yard. I always enjoyed touching base and was looking forward to face to face chats as we just installed a gate in our back fence this past summer. I will miss seeing her picking up twigs or watering her outdoor flowers. She was a zippy driver and had such a good sense of humor. Her jokes and laughter will be greatly missed by all.
Blessings and peace to her loved ones. Rest in Peace JoAnn.
