Joanne Just, age 80, formerly of Oakes, ND, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2022 at Edgewood Vista, Fargo under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Joanne (Popham) Just the eldest of 4 children born to Clarence and Mable (Swanson) Popham in Corvallis, MT. Graduating High School in 1959, Joanne went onto Montana State University to receive her teaching degree. She began her teaching career in Dillon, MT where she met the love of her life, Clarence (Chuck) Just. They were married August 18, 1963 in Hamilton, MT. Career paths led them to Wyoming, where their kids were born and later settling in Oakes in 1969. Joanne would teach for almost 30 years at Oakes Elementary, before retiring in 2003. Her students brought so much joy to her and the reward of her teaching kept many of them in contact with her for years to come.

In 2004, Chuck and Joanne moved to Middle Cormorant Lake to enjoy the retired life by the lake. There, Joanne would continue her love of reading, crosswords, being hostess to many gatherings, baking, cooking, and grand children’s events. Truly the greatest joy of Joanne was her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, whom she enjoyed spending time with as much as possible.

In 2013 they moved to Fargo to be closer to family and friends. Preceding her is her husband Chuck, parents, Clarence and Mable Popham, brother, Don Popham and nephew Brad Popham.

She will be dearly missed by her son Kevin, (Samantha & Andrew) Gilbert AZ, daughter Janel (Michael) Brooks, children Kelsie (Joel) Conway, (Raegan and Luke), Hannah Brooks, Jonathan Brooks, of Fargo. Brother, Bob (Jane) Popham, Sister, Dianne (Dale) Huhtanen both Montanta, in-laws, Dennis (Doris) Just, Berlin, ND and Harold Just, Eagan, MN along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A family memorial will be held in Corvallis, MT and Berlin, ND.

In lieu of cards and flowers, the family requests donations/memorials be sent to Hospice of the Red River Valley, Hope Blooms of Fargo, or charity of your choice.

  1. Chuck and Joanne were the best people we knew! We’ve had a lasting friendship that began when we (I) moved to Oakes in 1987. Thank you for all the times visiting, going to ball games, helping with wedding plans, coffee/snacks and the fellowship we had over the years. You’ll be missed❣️Hugs and prayers to the family and Janel..know you were deeply loved 🥰

  2. Joanne was my friend in Corvallis Montana from 1941, through CHS graduation in 1959, and continuing on through our married lives. I have many fond memories from a life time shared, and am sending my hearfelt thoughts to her family.
