John C. Bartels

john c. bartels
John Curtiss (Bart) Bartels was born on October 31, 1938, to Abraham and Olive (Ryam) Bartels in Mott, ND. John grew up in the Haynes, ND and Hettinger areas. He attended school in Haynes where he excelled in football, basketball and baseball, graduating in 1957. After high school, he had various jobs in Spokane WA and western ND. He moved to Hillsboro, ND, in 1966 where he went to work for Stuart Implement as a tractor mechanic. He met Shirley Sorum and they were married August 30, 1968. Shirley brought with her to that union Keven, Kent, Kandyce and Kyle. In 1969 their youngest child, Kory, was born. Bart, Shirley and the five K’s lived in Hillsboro where he continued his mechanic career and later other jobs that included truck driver, car salesman, construction laborer and equipment operator. He was known and admired for his pride, attitude and work ethic to provide for his family. Anyone that knew Bart would remember his keen sense of humor, and his ability to not forget someone once he met them. He was an avid sports fan who proudly cheered for the New York Yankees and Green Bay Packers. He spent many hours assembling over 100 jigsaw puzzles that were proudly displayed, sold and given away. In the past several years, John had been battling many different health issues, but they never took away his sense of humor. Shirley passed away in 2010, at which time he entered the Long Term Care unit at Hillsboro Medical Center. The entire staff was like extended family, and they were always there to care for Bart and his special needs like peanut butter toast at 2 a.m. John passed away May 22 under the care of Sanford Hillsboro Care Center and Hospice of the Red River Valley. Survivors include one daughter, Kandyce (Matt) Arriaga, Boise, ID; four sons, Keven (Melanie) Morehart, Winner, SD; Kent (best friend, Deanna) Morehart and Kyle (Amy Jo) Morehart, both of Hillsboro; Kory (Sheri) Bartels, Oxbow, ND; 19 grandchildren, Karissa, Kayla, Jacob, Maggi, Madyson, Bosten, and Stratton; Ashley, Josh, Joey & Madisyn; Adriana, Brandon, Paityn, Derek, Jacob & Mary; Parker & Avery; 14 great-grandchildren: Isabella, Amelia, Haley, Adaley, Noelle, Chloe, Logan, Conner, Landon, Knox, Lila, Myla, Tatum, Ace & Brandt; brothers, Aldon ”Skip” Bartels, Frances Bartels and Arlin Bartels; sisters, Joyce Wolff, Eunice Schneider, Karen Clement and Sherrill Bartels. Bart was preceded in death by his wife, parents, parents-in-law Albert and Martha Sorum, and sisters Janice Barone and Alice Lee. Bart’s family would like to especially thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Hillsboro Medical Center, Sanford Hillsboro Care Center, and Hospice for their kind and tender care during his stay. They were more than caregivers; they were friends.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. What fond memories! One of my earliest was the yellow station wagon, when Uncle Bart piled all us cousins in the back the evening of Grandpa Albert’s funeral. We loaded up and went to the cemetery to water the flowers placed earlier that day – he gave our Mom’s a break and took us all. That was quite a few kids! Didn’t matter to Bart. In fact, he kinda made it fun… in a way only Bart could.

Another memory is lefse making … (after Grandma Martha quit making hers) Shirley and I weren’t interested, but Kenny and Bart figured it wouldn’t be that hard. A fun day full of potatoes in the “orange house”. The lefse was VERY good, and I have my brand new (at the time) melted Tupperware bowl to remind me always. I still use the bowl today

Halloween is always special to any kid, but my girls rarely let it pass without stopping and singing Happy Birthday to Great Uncle Bart. It’s a memory we’ll always treasure.

Bart was a character, to his family, his friends, and his town. His character will be remembered always, along with his sense of humor, and his ability to make everyone smile.

I am certain that yesterday Shirley got up from her Bingo game, and they’re dancing together again.

  2. When I worked in Hillsboro Hospital Business office Bart would always come to the office and say HI to us and it made our day. Loved his visits
My sympathy’s to the family, in the short time I knew him, he seemed like a caring and fun loving man. He will be missed.

  3. Family of Bart,
We were saddened to read of Bart’s passing. My brother Ron is a resident on the second floor of care center. We would enjoy seeing and visiting with Bart. He would be in the hall, dining room or puzzle room most every time we were there. This past Sunday we didn’t see him and wondered how he was. We will miss our visits and his smile. I know my brother will miss him also at meals, bingo and the other things they did together. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

  4. Bart was a very kind and special person. His sense of humor was the best. He always had treats and shared with everyone. Rest in Peace.

  5. So sorry to family Barr was a great guy and will be missed by so many people loved his smile. My prayers are with the family

  6. I am very sadden to hear about the passing of Bart. A person with so much character and kindness is truely missed by many. God promises that he will bring back to life those who have passed away like Bart to life on a peacefull earth John 5:28,29. I’m sure you all cannot wait to enjoy his sense of humor and love once again. Hold on to this beautiful promise and I will include you in my prayers.
