John F. Muckenhirn

Memorial Mass:

Prayer Service:

John Francis Muckenhirn, 74, of Fargo, North Dakota, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2026, surrounded by his family.

John was born August 6, 1952, in Ellendale, North Dakota, to Gerald Muckenhirn and Frances (McShane) Muckenhirn. He graduated from Larimore High School in 1970 and attended North Dakota State University before transferring to Valley City State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. While at Valley City State, he met Lorrie Goeller in a zoology class. They were married on June 10, 1977, at St. Catherine’s Church in Valley City.

John began his teaching career in Munich, North Dakota, where he taught biology and chemistry. In 1983, the family moved to Oakes, where he taught at Oakes High School for 23 years until his retirement in 2007. He was known for his enthusiasm in the classroom and for catchphrases his students still remember today. He cared deeply about his students’ success and always enjoyed hearing from them long after they left his classroom.

Outside the classroom, John devoted countless hours to student athletes. He served as an assistant and later head coach of girls track and field, coached junior high football, served as head golf coach, and even drove the bus. For more than 30 years he officiated high school basketball and football games, working an estimated 2,500 games, including 18 ND Class B state basketball tournaments, and served as referee for two state football championships. In 2014, he was inducted into the North Dakota Officials Association Hall of Fame in recognition of his service to high school athletics.

In 2014, John and Lorrie moved to Fargo. John was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, hiking, golfing and traveling the world. He remained a loyal supporter of Valley City State and NDSU athletics and spent many Saturdays watching Bison football with his mother. Above all, he treasured time with his wife, his children, and especially his grandchildren.

John is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lorrie, of Fargo; his children, Eric (Katie) Muckenhirn of Pelican Rapids, MN, and Casey Muckenhirn of Minneapolis, MN; his grandchildren, Addilyn and Aiden; his mother, Frances Muckenhirn; his siblings, Joan (David) Morton, Jim (Barb) Muckenhirn, Jeri (Dan) Vanak, and Janel (Ken) Simonson; and many other relatives, friends, colleagues, and former students.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Muckenhirn.

Visitation will be 5-7 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 8, at Boulger Funeral Home in Fargo. The Memorial Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 9, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Horace.

    George and Kim Ganske

  2. John, you were a heck of a nice guy and it was great to play softball with you. I always remember you riding your bike to softball and bringing your two hydration drinks. So sorry to learn of your passing. Prayers for your family.
    Steve “Beak” Ulmer

  3. Jennifer (Hokana) Knutson says:

I always appreciated and respected you as my high school science teacher. I don’t know that I ever saw you get “bent out of shape”. As an adult, you were always fun to visit and joke around with. I’m sad you had to endure sickness and that you couldn’t stay longer. We all will miss you.

  4. My sympathy to the family. I knew John from my brother Doug Fair and enjoyed golfing with him. His brother Jim has been my friend for years. He will be missed.

  5. John was one of my closest friends when I taught with him in Oakes. He remained a friend that we could always plan on meeting the next 28 years after leaving Oakes. Every day was an expedition with John; his life was a larger expedition that he shared with us willfully. I have so many great memories with John Muckenhirn; I have my fullest regards and condolences to Lorrie, Eric, Casey, Jim & Barb, Janel & the rest of your family, as well. I already miss him greatly!

  6. My condolences to the entire Muckenhirn family. John was a committed athlete at Larimore High School. His quick smile and positive attitude was continually present. He will be missed. Jean (Hofer) Magnusson

  7. Dear Lorrie, Casey and Eric,
I’m heartbroken for the loss of this marvelous man. Husband, father and grandfather. I felt like knew him and you like the bestest of friends from our brief acquaintance in Spain. I feel blessed to have known him.
May his memory be a blessing ❤️

  8. Cherish the Memories! Prayers to you all
    Barb (Hofer) Murray and Keith

  9. Janel Mongeon McCall says:

My sincere condolences and prayers for the Muckenhirn family. John was just a kid when I knew the family in Rolette. It sounds like he grew to be a wonderful man. May you find peace in loving memories.

    • Prayers and condolences for the family. John was always one of my favorite officials growing up in Rolette and playing High School Sports. He was also a good friend to my parents as they had many friends from the Munich area having lived in Alsen.

  10. I remember the day John moved in with his family across the street from our family in Larimore. We played sports, had endless games of catch and did High School together. We kept running into each other over the years and had the occasional phone calls and our visits were always the same. John would fill me in about his family. Siblings, parents and mostly of his wife Lorrie and his two boys. John had no need to talk of himself but he was so proud of his family. During COVID he absolutely gushed about his admiration for his son Casey and the services he provided to victims of that disease. John had a successful life by any measure, and the measure that was most important to him was his family and he knocked one out of the park with them.

  11. John was a great friend and teammate at Larimore High School…was two years younger but we played both basketball and baseball together in the late 60’s…John’s parents and siblings were considered an outstanding family in Larimore…crazy that I recently played golf with John in AZ this past winter and I certainly didn’t have any idea that he may have been ill…Life is short and precious so huge your family and good friends whenever possible…

  12. Our sympathy to the entire Muckenhirn family! I met John at Valley City State and we became friends immediately. There were about eight of us that did many social events together. John would always remind me not to litter or discard anything! He was a great example of protecting the environment. I refereed many basketball games with John even though we were in different Refereeing associations (John in Oakes and I was in Jamestown). We often both drove to the games we reffed and met at the game site. He was an outstanding official and person.
    We will miss you John!
    Frank and Dianne Conlon

  13. I enjoyed our time with John in Spain. We are so glad we had the chance to meet him. Lots of with John, Laurie and Casey. Will treasure our time together.

  14. My condolences to the family.. John and I spent several days hunting in the fall’s , when he lived in Oakes, ND .. We harvested many Pheasants over that time.. I always enjoyed this time with John(his Dad sometimes capped fields for us).. His dog and mine became great hunting pals .. I will always have great memories of playing Softball with John as well.. Dave Zetocha

  15. Fran, Sorry for your loss along with all those who grieve.
We belong now to Blessed Sacrament in West Fargo.
    Kathleen/Robert Bennett

  16. To all of John’s family, I offer my deepest sympathy and condolences. I am so sorry for your loss. May your memories, your faith, and your friends see you through all the grieving. Be assured of my prayers for you all.
    Cindy Klapperich

  17. My care and sympathy to John’s family. I was a neighbor and friend of his mom and dad while I was a pastor in Enderlin. If John was anything like Fran and Gerry I know that he was a one of a kind great man. My condolences especially to Fran as she goes through this time of the loss of a dear child. May our loving God comfort and keep you in the promises that come to us in the life, death, and resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ. Because He lives… We too shall live.
    Blessings and Love,
    Pastor Becky Lee

  18. Jan (Backer) Thompson says:

Fran and Eric, the rest of the family. My condolences to all of you at this sad time. I think of you often, especially Fran. You are a special lady and it sounds like you John was a lot like his Mother. Prayers to all of you and for John.

    • May the Lord be with you during this difficult time. I only met John a couple times but I could easily see his love for his family. I will continue to pray for peace and comfort for the family. Rest in peace, John. You left a legacy.

  19. Tracy and Laverne Buzick says:

We were fortunate to sit in front of John at the Bison games. I had many discussions with him about the Bison, football in general, and his long career and accomplishments as a ref. When I would complain about a call on the field he would explain the why and why not that was a good or bad call. I noticed his absence this year and had the opportunity to meet his sister last home game who filled us in. We did not know him well – but he will be missed on game day by us and the Bison family.

  20. Denise-Stoll-Vonderharr says:

Johnny authentically shared a genuine love of life, uninhibited, with such a natural curiosity, quest for knowledge and passing that knowledge on, a unique humor and optimism that family and friends wholeheartedly connected to and shared in so many special ways!
Your spirit is with us always in gratitude for your special friendship!

  21. My heartfelt condolences go out to Lori, Eric and Casey. John was an adventurer and I enjoyed his travel posts. He was a respected teacher in Oakes and a good guy all around. I know Lori from growing up in Valley City and attending St. Kate’s. Wonderful family. God bless.
