John J. Huber, 90, died Saturday, August 12, 2006 at Elim Care Center in Fargo. John was born on October 21, 1915 near Berwick (Fulda), McHenry County, ND to Simon and Veronica (Bischoff) Huber who immigrated from Ukraine, Russia in 1902. He moved with his family at age one to Devils Lake, ND where he was educated in the elementary and high schools through 1935. He received his GED from North Dakota State University in 1952. He married Laura Huffman of Minnewaukan, ND on March 13, 1937 in Grand Forks, ND; they established their home in Devils Lake. He was employed by Mayer and Great Northern Hotels for eight years as a desk clerk. In 1943 he began work with the US Employment Service (ND) as an Interviewer I, II, III. During World War II he was with the War Food Administration in Chicago as Camp Manager for Mexican agricultural workers. He was then loaned to Badger Ordinance Works, Baraboo, WI as Camp Manager for imported workers from Jamaica and Barbados. He also served as Recreational Director for the plant until VJ Day. After the war he returned to Devils Lake and went to work for Montgomery Ward as Furniture Department Manager for 31 years until his retirement in July 1977. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, a life member of the Devils Lake Elks Lodge, and a member and Director of the Board of the Devils Lake Town and Country Club where he administered the Labor Day Golf Tournaments for many years. He also served in the North Dakota National Guard from 1933-1936. He enjoyed hunting, was an avid golfer and bumper pool aficionado. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Marlene (Boyd) Christenson, Fargo, ND; two grandchildren, Mona (Dr. Gregory) Barz, Nashville, TN and Dr. Mark Christenson, Grand Forks, ND; grandson-in-law, Dr. Napoleon (Marlene) Espejo, Fargo, ND; and eight great grandchildren, Simon Barz, Lucy Barz, Alyssa Christenson, Jessica Christenson, Natalia Espejo, Juan Espejo, Luis Espejo and Daniel Espejo. He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters; six brothers; and a granddaughter, Laura Christenson Espejo.
