Joseph passed away on Friday, January 30, 2026, at his home in Walcott, ND.

Joseph Charles Nelson was born on January 11, 1968, at St. Francis Hospital in Breckenridge, Minnesota, to Charles and Margaret (Edwards) Nelson. He attended school in Davenport and Kindred, North Dakota, where he developed a lifelong love for tinkering and repairing vehicles.

Joe could be referred to as a “Jack of all Trades and a Fix it Man” – always tinkering in a shop, working on a vehicle, or motorcycle, or doing carpentry repairs. He was always busy planning a future road trip, whether it was on one of his motorcycles or off-road vehicles. Most of all, Joe loved spending time with his family and friends, who will miss him dearly. He was employed at American Crystal Sugar Company in Moorhead, MN, at the time of his passing.

At a young age, Joseph charted his own path. He was known for his mechanical curiosity and sense of humor – which many of his friends and family members experienced. His life’s journey took many different roads as he made his way, making special bonds with people on each adventure. Joe found one of life’s greatest rewards in the birth of his son, Tyler, shared with Cathy. He was also lucky to share his life with others along the way and enjoyed the time spent raising his blended family with Patty, including Zach and Stephanie, and with Angelique and her son, Roy.

Joe was the proud father of his son, Tyler Deutsch of Colony, WY; his granddaughters – Breena and Delaney; his sister, Theresa (Mike) Bellanger of Waubun, MN; his nieces – Josie and Gabby; as well as numerous cousins, aunts, uncles and many dear friends who were all very special to him.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his nephew, Tanner Bellanger; his uncle, Bruce Nelson; and maternal and paternal grandparents.

  13. What a great coworker Joe was. Working 12 hour rotating shifts together you get to know people pretty well, and Joe was amazing. We worked many long hours through holidays, blizzards, birthdays and more.
