Joseph William Berg

Funeral Mass:

Prayer Service:

Sadly, Joseph William Berg passed away on June 10, 2026, following a tragic accident at his home.

Joe was born on March 1, 1952, in Breckenridge, MN, to Louise and LeRoy Berg Sr. He grew up on a dairy farm in rural Fairmount, ND, where he developed the strong work ethic, faith, and steady character that would define his life.

On May 25, 1974, Joe married Georgia Bjorgan at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Fargo, ND. They first made their home in Fargo before moving to Kindred, ND in 1986. Joe and Georgia’s 52-year marriage stands as a testament to faith, love, and commitment—a legacy that lives on through the family they nurtured and lives they touched. They were blessed with four children, who in turn blessed them with fourteen, and soon-to-be fifteen, grandchildren. “Grandpa” Joe adored them.

Joe graduated from North Dakota State College of Science in 1972 with a degree in Electronics Technology. He worked on the family farm until he began his career with Northwestern Bell (eventually CenturyLink), as a Central Office Technician in April of 1974. He was devoted to the company until his retirement in July of 2017. His commitment, dependability, and excellence left a lasting impression on his coworkers. His camaraderie with them continued after retirement with regular coffee meetings in town.

Joe was a modern-day MacGyver who was often asked to help with any project around the house or yard—whether woodworking, machine and engine repair, fabricating parts, building helpful devices, home improvement, or almost anything his family needed. He enjoyed being productive and spent many hours in his shop. Joe regularly gave and sacrificed his time for his family, siblings, friends, and church.

Joe’s love for agriculture developed when he was young and never left him. Each year, he enjoyed bringing in the harvest locally in Kindred. He enjoyed the fruits of his home garden, including homemade wine.

Joe served in multiple ways as a member of St. Maurice’s Catholic Church after moving to the Kindred area. He was also involved with the Kindred Fire Department for nearly 35 years, he was a member of the Plane Sense Flying Club in Kindred, and he served on the board for several charitable endeavors.

Joe loved spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed camping and fishing with his brother Gerald and anyone who was brave enough to join them in the Boundary Waters. He enjoyed deer and pheasant hunting each season. He enjoyed dancing, especially a polka; his daughters always wanted the first dance with their Dad. Recently, he jumped into the challenge of ranching at his son’s new cattle ranch.

Joe was loved, admired, and well-respected by all. He constantly served and inspired those around him. He will be deeply missed, and the only solace in his passing is that Joe’s unwavering faith in Christ reserved for him the same resurrection.

Joe was preceded in death by daughter Allison Moline; parents Louise and LeRoy Berg, Sr.; parents-in-law George and Hilda Bjorgan; godson Josh Berg; nephew Randy Link; and several brothers- and sisters-in-law.

He is survived by wife Georgia; son Matt (Kortney) Berg (Leonard, ND); daughter Kim (Matt) Olson (Williamsburg, VA); daughter Brianna (James) Dickey (Andover, MN); and his grandchildren, Gannon and Kaylin Berg; Josh, Wyatt, Mae Anne, and Silas Olson; Isaac, Carter, Graham, Clara, and Sheppard Moline; and Allison, Camilla, and Vivienne Dickey.
