Resided in: Fargo, North Dakota

Karen Volk, 70 and of Fargo, passed away on Sunday, September 25, 2022 at St. Catherine’s South in Fargo, ND.

Karen was born on June 8, 1952 in Bismarck, ND, to Eugene and Ruth (Zimmerman) Rau. She graduated from Napoleon High School in 1970 and completed 2 years of college at Dickinson State University.

Karen married Gary Volk on November 25, 1972 at St. Boniface Church in Kintyre, ND. Karen and Gary farmed in Kintyre for many years where they raised their 4 children. Once they left the farm and their children were out of the house, Karen worked as a CNA. She had a way of connecting with the residents she cared for and made them feel special. In her spare time, Karen loved to embroider, sew, make quilts, bake and cook. Karen cherished and adored every moment spent with her family, particularly her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she will forever be remembered by her grandchildren for having an endless supply of monster cookies for them to devour.

Karen is survived by her husband, Gary; her children, Sherry (Mike) Fife, Lori (Jason) Hill, Lance Volk and Ryan (Dana) Volk; her 10 grandchildren, Shantel, Dylan, Trae, Paris, Jack, Natasha, Collin, Levi, Jocelyn and Kylah; her 3 great-grandchildren, Ayden, Grayson and Harper; her brother, Delane (Kay) Rau; her sister-in-laws, Fran Weigum and Lorraine Rau; her brother-in-law, Ben (Connie) Volk; and many loved ones.

Karen is preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Ruth Rau; her in-laws, Ben and Barbara Volk; her brother, Charles Rau; her brother-in-law, Jerry Weigum; and many loved ones.

A special thank you to the staff on Friendship Lane at St. Catherine’s South for their wonderful humor, smiles and genuine care for Karen.

  5. Sherry, Lori, Lance and Ryan, I’m sure you knew how much your mom loved each of you, and how proud she was of the young adults you have turned out to be. In the last few weeks we had visits talking about our families, and how we would die here on earth, and live forever in heaven. We agreed we would both prefer to die in our sleep. She said she so looked forward to being reunited with her kids for eternity. How lucky for you guys to have had a mom like her. And how lucky for you guys to know she’ll be waiting for you. Blessed be her memory❤
