Karen L. Busche, 72, of Fargo, ND, passed away Friday afternoon, November 15, 2024, at Essentia Hospital in Fargo from complications of a cancer surgery she had undergone a few days previously.

Karen was born on February 10, 1952, at Ada, MN, the daughter of Calman L. and A. Luverne (Erickson) Bredman. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and educated in Ada Schools, graduating from Ada High School with the Class of 1970. Karen went on to attend the Fairview School of Nursing in Minneapolis, MN, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1972. During these years Karen began dating a young man, also from Ada, Harold Truman Myers Jr. Hal was serving with the US Army including a tour of duty in Vietnam. They were united in marriage on October 21, 1972 and made their first home in Richfield, MN.

Karen was employed as an RN at Fairview Hospital and Hal for the US Postal Service. In the coming years their marriage would be blessed by the births of Michael, Steven, and Rebecca. After several years they decided to leave the hustle and bustle of the Twin Cities for Frontier, ND, located just south of Fargo. For the balance of her career in Nursing Karen worked as a floor nurse and eventually charge nurse of the telemetry unit of Fargo’s Dakota Hospital and later for MeritCare.

On September 13, 1997, Karen married Dale L. Busche from Devils Lake, ND whom she had met on a blind date a year earlier. Not only did she find happiness with Dale, but she gained 3 more children: Scott, Heather, and Sarah and their families. Life was good! Dale sold his American Family Insurance Agency in Devils Lake and moved to Fargo where he continued to work with a local American Family Agency. Dale was an avid UND Sioux fan and Karen was just as loyal or even more so an NDSU Bison fan. She converted him by about 80% to her side and they rarely missed a Bison football game, even making a few road trips to games in Iowa where Dale had family living. (He continued to quietly cheer the Sioux on). Karen and Dale loved their life together and enjoyed traveling; making trips to San Francisco, Boston, Mississippi, Florida, and Michigan. In retirement Karen began working from home as a medical transcriptionist and a few years later Karen and Dale moved to a lake home they built near Lake Park, MN on Leaf Lake. Dale continued to work as an American Family insurance agent and commuted to Fargo every day. Eventually they felt it was more beneficial for him to return to Fargo. Sadly, Dale was diagnosed with cancer later in 2015 and he passed away on February 17, 2016. Rather than remain at home day after day, missing Dale and mourning his loss, Karen decided to begin working part time at Slim Chickens. Keeping busy and being with people every day became her grief therapy.

Karen will be remembered for her kindness to family and friends, both old and new. She was incredibly humble and always reflected attention away from herself to others. She loved unconditionally and met each and every challenge that came her way as she lived her best life. Her diagnosis of cancer came only a few weeks before her life came to a close, and she admitted that she was a bit afraid before her surgery. But she was the bravest person her family ever knew and now that she has met her Lord and Savior and been reunited with Dale and so many who have gone before brings comfort.
Karen’s world revolved around her blended family. She was grateful to have her 3 children right in Fargo, and able to see her other 3 children as often as possible. Her son, Mike and his wife, Shonna, gave her a granddaughter, Anya, and the two became “best buddies for life” with Karen always looking forward to their Saturday night sleepovers.

Karen will be forever loved and sadly missed by her 6 children: Michael and Shonna Myers of Fargo; Steven Myers of Ada, MN, and Rebecca Myers of Fargo; Scott and Belinda Busche of Lakeville, MN, Heather and Fuad Abbasoglu of Delran, NJ, and Sarah Busche of Alexandria, MN; 5 grandchildren: Anya Myers, Eric and Hayden Busche, and Connor and Duncan Vandergon; her brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Rose Bredman of Crookston, MN; and from Dale’s family, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Randy and Candace Busche of Cedar Falls, IA, Douglas and Lana Busche of Fountain Hills, AZ, and Rawla and Terry Adkins of Rochester, MN; many nieces and nephews; cousins; extended members of the Bredman, Busche and Myers families; and her many friends.

In addition to Dale, her beloved husband and best friend of 28 years, Karen is preceded in death by her parents, Cal and Luverne Bredman; a nephew, Beau Donald Miller; her former spouse, Harold Myers and many extended members from all sides of her family.

Treasured be Karen’s memory to all who were grateful to have shared in and been a part of her life.

In keeping with Karen’s wishes a private family memorial service will be held to celebrate her life.

  11. To my cousins: it’s been a tough year for you. I’m sorry that life tossed you another challenge so soon. My prayers for you will be that life takes it easy on you for a long while now.

It’s such a small thing, but Aunt Karen always comes to mind when I eat Little Debbie treats. I don’t eat them often, and we weren’t allowed them growing up, but it was your mom who first gave me a white frosted one with chocolate chips on it for a snack during a sleepover with Cousin Becky. I remember thinking something like, “What sweet heavenly bliss is this?!” I passed them at the store the other day after learning of her passing and bought a box of the zebra striped ones after failing to find ones with chocolate chips on top. I opened a pack of two and enjoyed them, just like in my youth, while remembering Aunt Karen. May that same sweetness surround her from here on out.

  12. I worked with Karen in the Nuclear Medicine department at MeritCare in Fargo 20 years ago and we became good friends. I was saddened to hear of her passing but will always cherish our friendship.

  13. I live across the street from Karen. I am shocked and saddened to lose a neighbor whom I could count on. Please accept my sympathy for your loss.
