Karen Shirley Sorby, 79, passed away November 19, 2022 at her residence at New Perspective Senior Living in West Fargo surrounded by her daughters.

Karen was born May 1, 1943 to Clarence and Marvel (Kellerman) Steinweg in Fargo, ND. She was raised on the family farm in rural Davenport. Karen graduated from Davenport High School and was the valedictorian of her class. She was involved in many school activities. Karen attended Interstate Business School and went on to work at Hebron Brick Company and Harold’s Optical.

She met her husband, Jerry Sorby on a blind date and they were married March 6, 1965 at Canaan Moravian Church. They started their married life in Fargo with her beloved beagle, Sugar. They moved to Kindred, ND to start their family later moving to Davenport, ND. Karen stayed home to raise their two daughters, Juli and Darla being supportive in all their school activities.

Karen was very busy volunteering in her community. She volunteered in multiple roles in the Pine to Prairie Girl Scout Council receiving many awards and recognitions for over 35 years of service. Karen’s favorite roles were being a Girl Scout Troop Leader and Day Camp Director. She was involved in the Davenport Fire Auxiliary. She enjoyed teaching fire safety in the Kindred School system. Karen was also a Cass County First Responder and CPR instructor. She was very involved in the Canaan Moravian Church where she was active in teaching Sunday School, Women’s Fellowship, and various church committees.

Karen’s favorite hobbies were reading, scrapbooking, playing cards and dominos, traveling, attending plays and musicals. She loved socializing with friends and neighbors. Karen especially loved making memories with her grandsons.

Karen is survived by her daughters, Juli (Dan) Dyre of Park Rapids, MN, Darla (Larry) Jelen of Rio Rancho, NM; grandsons, Jordan Brewster, Dakota Brewster, Jacob Jelen; great grandchildren, Arayah Parsons, Benjamin Brewster, Alivia Brewster; brother, Sidney Steinweg of Colorado Springs, CO; sister in law, Lucy Sorby of Fargo, ND; sisters in law and brother in law, Bonnie Sorby and Richard (Dayna) Sorby all of Moorhead, MN; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerald; brother in law, David Sorby; and niece, Tami Sorby.

  2. Thoughts and prayers to all of Karen’s family. I so enjoyed my visits with her when she would come into the bank. She was always a light in my day visiting about her daughters and family.

  3. So sorry for your loss. Karen was such a good friend. We had many adventures in our Girl Scout years and later after I moved back to Fargo and reconnected. I have so many good memories and so sorry we have lost her. I know she will be missed by many. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
