Kathleen Silkey Prayer Service:

Kathleen Ann Silkey, age 73, passed away on November 14, 2023, after her battle with liver cancer. Kathie was born to Ted and Dorothy Edinger May 20, 1950, in Carrington, North Dakota. Kathie attended Carrington High School being active in cheerleading, choir and other activities. She graduated from Dickinson State Nursing School as a LPN.

Kathie met Roger during high school and they formed a loving relationship that lasted until her passing. They were married September 13, 1969, in Carrington, North Dakota and cherished over 54 years of marriage.

In September 1969 Kathie and Roger moved to Peoria, Illinois where they lived and worked before returning to the Fargo area in 1974.

Her wonderful children Jessica, Adam and Nick were all born in Fargo. She was a loving mother and nurtured them into the adults they are today. Kathie also treasured seeing all of her grandchildren born, grow and become their own personalities. She was so proud of them.

Kathie worked at NDSU for 40 years in several administrative capacities, became a Bison fan and made many friends there until retiring in 2014.

She was a dedicated wife, mom, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her hobbies included home decorating anywhere she lived, hosting wonderful family holiday meals, and raising beautiful flowers. Kathie loved to decorate for Christmas.

After retiring, Kathie and Roger traveled to Mesa, Arizona and truly enjoyed their winter months with good friends and family visits.

Kathie was blessed with the friendship of Hope Lutheran members, lake neighbors, Fargo neighbors, NDSU Bison followers, Arizona pickle ball and water aerobics groups, Laguna Azul (Mesa) neighbors and many other acquaintances over the years.

The family would like to express appreciation to the Roger Maris Cancer Center, Fargo, ND and MD Anderson Cancer Center, Mesa, AZ; the doctors, nurses and staff. Special thanks to the Sanford staff Oncology Department as well as the Sanford Hospice House.

Please send any memorials to Roger Maris Cancer Center Fargo, North Dakota.

Kathie has been reunited in heaven with her father Ted, mother Dorothy, sister Phyllis Benson, sister Donna Menke-Ouren, and sister Kay Kuske.

Kathie is survived by her husband of 54 years, Roger; daughter Jessica (Chris) Kallenbach, Fargo, ND; sons Adam Silkey, San Diego, CA and Nick (Laura) Silkey, Fargo, ND; brother, Larry (Sue) Edinger, Cold Spring, MN; sister, Susan (Donald- deceased) Radtke, Fargo, ND; Mary (David) Zentner, Bismarck, ND; Ted Edinger, Pineville, LA; brother and sister-in-law Richard (Barbara) Silkey, Dickinson, ND; five grandchildren: McKenna Silkey, Benjamin Kallenbach, Elizabeth Kallenbach, Olivia Silkey, and Ryan Silkey; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. We loved Kathie’s smile, heart, and kindness. But most of all, we just loved HER. We will miss her at the lake, but will always think of her when we see her flowers in bloom and eat her raspberry jam. She was a fabulous gardener. Our heart aches for Roger and the rest of the family. Rest in peace dear one. We love you and miss you already.

    • Roger and Cathy were our neighbors in Harwood for years and saw them often at Hope North. A very sad loss!! Our thoughts and prayers are with you Roger.

  2. Roger,
We are so sorry for your loss of Kathy.
You will continue to be in our prayers during this difficult time,
    Ken & Judy Schuster

  3. So sorry for your loss. I will miss Kathy’s smile as she walked around SVE. She will be missed by so many.
    Nancy Ruth

  4. We are so sorry to hear of Kathie’s passing. She was a beautiful lady, inside as well as outside. May she rest in peace and may all her memories bring some comfort to Roger and family as you manage through this difficult time. You are in our prayers.

  5. Roger, I’m so sorry for your loss of Kathy. I’m sending my deepest sympathies to you and your family.
    Peggy Hayes

  6. I had the honor of working with Kathy at NDSU many years ago. It was just a year or so ago that I was shopping at Costco and Kathy saw me and walked up to me and gave me a big hug. That was always her style – sweet, friendly, kind and compassionate. I am not sure how long we talked in the meat section but long enough where people started looking at us as though we were in their way – which we probably were! We simply laughed and kept talking about our kids. My prayers to Roger and family during this time of loss.

    Dr. Twyla Nielsen

  7. Roger and family we are so sorry to hear about Kathie’s passing. She was a gem and always had a smile and a conversation. May She Rest in Peace. Thoughts and prayers to you and your family. Jim and Jodi

  8. Roger,
We are deeply saddened by the news of Kathy’s passing. We have great memories of our times together on the pickleball courts at SVE. She will be missed by so many.

  9. To the family of Kathy (Edinger) Silkey, I was a high school classmate of Kathy’s from Carrington, ND. (Our class has a caring, astute class rep. that informs the rest of us of major news.) My memory of Kathy was her enthusiastic cheerleading!! And her infectious smile!! No doubt she with her warm personality will be deeply missed. My sympathy to each of you….

  10. Jessica and family- I heard of your mom’s passing through my own mother. Cancer is a beast and losing a parent is so difficult, especially after that have taught and given you so much. Hoping that the great memories of your mom help comfort you during your grief. My thoughts are with you and your families.

  11. Kathie was a wonderful person with a big heart. She will be missed by all of her friends. I really enjoyed working on the social committee with her. She is now at peace without any pain. Hugs to her family!

  12. Sending hugs and prayers to all of the family! Kathy was a beautiful lady inside and out! Kathy always had a smile on her face and was dressed so nice. When you saw Kathy, there was Roger at her side. They had a true partnership. It has been a joy to have Roger and Kathy as friends and neighbors at the lake. Kathy will be missed but never forgotten. Sincerely, Ron and Jennifer Halda

  13. Roger and family – my heart goes out to you all. As a schoolmate in Carrington and again as a cheering fan at NDSU Bison football games she always brought joy to all she touched. I had missed seeing her at the Bison games and then joyfully found the two of you in Mesa with Neil’s family. Once again we were surrounded by that joyful smile and warm inclusive attitude of love. She will always be in our hearts.

  14. Roger: Luanna & I are deeply saddened. We send our prayers and support to you and your entire family. Wish we could be there

  15. Roger and Family,
I am so saddened to hear of Kathie’s passing. Prayers for you all as you navigate this most difficult time. Roger I know she was the love of your life and I always thought of her as my coolest auntie when I was growing up. Her beautiful smile made you smile right back at her. Jessica, Adam and Nick, I’m so sorry you and your kids will not have the years together that we all want with our Moms. Stay strong for each other, keep those pictures and memories close as you will need them and cherish them always. She will always be with you in your heart. I hope you will continue to love the things she loved. God is good and will strengthen your family. Our Moms are more than likely enjoying gardening “together” now and growing their beautiful flowers.
Love to you All & wish I could be there with you, Wendy Jackson (Kuske) and Family

  16. When I think of Kathie there’s so many lovely memories that come to mind – how she always had her hair done with pedicured toes to match, making the best cheesy potatoes on Christmas and Easter, at least 2 to 3 fully decorated Christmas trees around the house, breaking out the TGIF potato skins at the lake, always having mints to share, and singing along to all our kids songs – even if we had already played the CD 4 times over.

Sending love and light to Roger, Jess, Nick, and all the family during this difficult time. She was a very special lady who loved dearly, may she rest in peace. 🕊️

  17. Roger- So sorry to see of Kathie’s passing. It was always fun seeing you guys at the Bison games. We are on s South American cruise. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the kids during this difficult time. Love and prayers, Vern and Doris Hebert

  18. Having worked with Kathy for much of those 40 NDSU years, I benefited from the kindness and respect she showed to everyone in her presence. I am reminded that her presence in my life was important and that her spirit continues.
